Sporty - Comfortable - Fun To Drive

2023 Volkswagen Arteon
After having had my Arteon for a year, I love this car. The only thing I don’t love about it is the 20” rims. They cause you to feel every crack in the road. True, they look amazing, but if I were buying the car again, I would opt to not get that feature. The bumpiness of the 20” rims can be thwarted by using the comfort suspension feature, but it’s still not something that is absolutely … necessary. The only issue I’ve had with it is in the radiator. Volkswagen put the coolant sensor too high, so I have to overfill it a bit to make the car think it has enough coolant. Other than that, I love this car. It’s fast (faster than my ‘94 Firebird), handles very well, and gets great gas mileage. It’s my empty-nester car and my daily driver. I’m sorry they’ve stopped making them as I love this car.
UPDATE: This is now the second VW I've owned in the past 10 years and I can't help but love this car. There are certainly some annoyances that come with it, but all in all, I've been very satisfied with it. I went with it because I couldn't justify the price tag of it's counterpart, the Audi A5 sportback.
Pros: It's comfortable enough for everyday driving and has plenty of acceleration when it's needed. The bells and whistles that come with the R-Line Premium are impressive. For a full sized sedan, I regularly get between 28-30 mpg, which is great for both every day driving as well as highway. The Harmon Kardan sound system is great, complete with subwoofer with many different way to configure it. This car can hold a LOT of stuff. I'm a musician and with the back seats folded down, I can fit 3 guitars, and road case guitar stand, and much more in this thing. It's pretty impressive, actually. The 20" rims look sharp...real sharp and the electronic suspension adjustment makes for a sporty and yet comfortable ride.
Cons: Having said that, if you're not used to low profile tires, they DO pick up every bump in the road. I drive mine in sport mode most of the time, which allows for higher RPM shifting with the DSG transmission, but also stiffens the suspension. Buyers be aware that this vehicle takes PREMIUM gasoline. I was duped by the dealer on this, in which more than one VW dealer told me that VW was not making high compression engines anymore. False! Edmunds is right in that the infotainment center is finicky. I have to reset mine about once a week which is more annoying than anything else. The only other thing that I've been disappointed with, honestly, is the paint job. VW did a bad job of painting these. Mine looks like a casualty of war from driving everyday just to work. My Jetta was not the same way.
