2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
I purchased a new 2016 Rav4 Hybrid in the XLE trim. I added factory remote start and all-weather floor mats. I was trying to choose between this more "responsible" car and my dream pickup truck. The adult in me decided that I need to grow up and get a practical car, so I got the Rav4. I must say, this car has been pretty fun and amazing to drive. They use a nice blend of new tech … and old school stuff...I didnt get the tech package that has blind spot monitoring, but the XLE does come with the special side mirrors so you can see your blind spot just fine the old fashioned way! The way they handle the GPS is clever too, you actually run the app on your phone and just project it into the display screen. Since 90% of people probably would just use their phone anyway, this just makes it so much easier and cheaper! This car really changes how you drive too. Its like a fun game to try to hit that eco mode where the engine switches off and you are 100% battery power. I find it is optimized from 0 - 20 mph and right around 40 mph. I can cruse for long distances without using any gas at those speeds, if you are careful. You sorta have to drive like an old lady, but with practice you can really improve your MPG. Two complaints: 1. with the battery pack in the back of the car, going over a pothole or railroad tracks and make it sound like you are driving in downtown Baghdad. There are some very loud and rough rides if you dont go slow enough. 2. the breaks take getting used too. it seems that the car is either in go or no go mode...once you hit the breaks nothing really happens, but press just a little further and WOW its like you are slamming on the brakes. I have gotten used to it now (three months in) but it will take some getting used too.
Update 10 Months in - the connected app that I liked before for navigation is now getting sorta annoying, so I don't use it. For the iPhone, in location settings that app is either on 100% of the time or off. That means that you have to enable your location services stuff on your phone and have it track your movements every day. I always have my location services set to off unless using, so I don't use the dedicated navigation app anymore. It would be possible to just turn on location settings whenever I get into the car and need navigation, so it isn't really a huge deal I suppose. Also, the navigation app doesn't report upcoming turns like google or apple maps does, where you see on a map when you are coming up to your turn. The app just reports 1,000 ft, 500 ft, 180 ft, etc...unless you are used to that it could be tough to know when you are coming up to a turn or an exit. Again, probably not a big deal but its worth knowing that there might be a bit of a learning curve if you are inexperienced or new to driving.
Also, there have been one recall on the trunk latch - not a big deal as Toyota will replace it for free but its something to know. I'm sure that if you buy a new 2016 model off the lot they will already have it replaced.
All in all I'm still loving this car. The sky blue really stands out and the sharp styling is pretty cool looking. Sure, I wanted a pickup but I find this 100x more useful and practical in everyday usage.
