This vehicle is NO LONGER fixable for most people

Raiden, 03/31/2024
2014 Toyota RAV4 EV
TL;DR if you do not live in California (and perhaps even if you do) you should NOT buy this car as it is technically illegal to do so and you will not be able to get it serviced if anything happens. While some red flags appeared more immediately, that was heavily influenced by the lack of support by the dealership who clearly had no idea what they were selling. For the first 6 months … of ownership I was singing its praises as a great vehicle that could get you around town without needing gas and had great capacity for kids and extra passengers. The problems really began when we noticed the heat didn’t seem to be working (we bought it in late April). I called to have it serviced at a local Toyota dealership who said they were unable to work on this vehicle (red flag #1). We found another Toyota dealership who would look at it. After diagnosing there was an issue with the heating unit, they noted the part was no longer available to be purchased and they would have to hire a specialized tech to install as they were not trained to service this vehicle (red flag #2). They also noted that the car really should not be owned outside the state of CA as that is where all the trained techs were to work on this vehicle (red flag #3). In the immediate, I decided I would not get it fixed and deal with a season of it being cold (I drove it very sparingly). For the next 2 months, I drove it less than once a week as it was extremely cold at times (winter in Maryland). After 2 weeks of not using it, I came out to start it up and go to the store. Battery was completely dead to the point the door needed to be manually opened by the key. After trying to charge it with no success, I jump started the car which did allow it to turn on. An error immediately popped on the dash noting an issue with power steering and required to be serviced by a dealership. I suspected at this point there was also some kind of electrical issue based on how the car was responding (lights flickering for instance). I had the vehicle towed to the same dealership for service. When servicing it, they let me know upon getting the vehicle started, the error codes would not read and therefore had no idea what was actually wrong. This makes no sense to me and I could not tell if this had something to do with lack of expertise by the dealership or the car itself, but either way it meant whatever immediate issue had been fixed and the car was driving again with no issues. They reiterated the car really should be returned to CA so there were more techs who would be able to service it (read below more specific reasoning behind that statement). While driving down a steep hill on my way home from work a warning light popped on stating there was an issue with the power steering system and should be serviced by a dealership. It also immediately shifted into neutral which was surprising while surrounded in traffic going down a hill. The steering became very stiff as one might expect if you’ve ever driven a car without power steering (spoiler alert: it sucks!). I did manage to safely coast down the hill, change lanes safely, and find the shoulder to safely stop. I shut the car off for a minute and then turned it back on. When turned back on, no error message…as if nothing had even happened (red flag #4). While reluctant, I shifted it into drive and continued as I was pretty close to my house. I thought it likely best to take calmer set of backroads the rest of the way home and I am glad I did. Getting to the last street before my house and a steep hill in front of me the car once again cut out with the same error message and shifted into neutral while rolling down the road. I steered off to the side and parked it. After shutting it off and turning it back on again, immediately got the error message and had no ability to put it into drive any longer. Given the pervious dealership’s apparent lack of expertise, I tried a different Toyota dealership to see if they could be of more help. The good news was they absolutely were more knowledgeable and so pleasant to work with (shout out to Bill Kidds Toyota Service team in Baltimore). The bad news is I pulled on the string of this vehicle’s serviceability and went down the rabbit hole too far. They started by letting me know this vehicle can ONLY be serviced using specialized Tesla equipment (it is a Tesla under the hood after all) and that the equipment and software to do so will very soon no longer be available for use. As in you will not even be able to diagnose issues soon. That means if an issue popped up the tech would be in the dark and have to troubleshoot manually (and without a tool to speak with the computer there are several repairs that cannot even be repaired manually). The service team also enlightened me that it is not even that these vehicles should not be serviced outside of CA (implying it just is not a good idea). Instead, those who bought this vehicle in CA (which was the ONLY state you could buy it in at the time of them being sold new) had to sign a legal document stating they would NOT sell it outside of CA (red flag #5). In the advent of mass online dealers (Carvana, carmax, etc) it would seem this critical detail was not explicitly connected to the vehicles and they are now being found all over the US (red flag #6). After a few failed attempts to connect with the cars computer, they were finally able to use the software to connect and based on the error code we’re able to narrow the issue down to an issue with the engine (nothing wrong with the power steering mind you which is all it kept telling me on the dash while in the vehicle). After finding the specific part needed to repair the issue, they informed me the part itself it was around $7k but the real problem is that the part itself is no longer manufactured and extremely difficult (actually closer to impossible) to find requiring it be salvaged from another vehicle of the same type (red flag #…I have lost count at this point). Their search yielded absolutely no results and therefore the ability to get the part impossible, making the car unable to be fixed. I was able to find a company who felt so incredibly sorry for me that they would tow it away and out of my sight so I no longer had to regret its very existence. In summary, if you enjoy living on the edge and tempting fate hoping you are one of the lucky few who own a car for years on end with no issue this might be for you. If you however treasure your sanity and take solace in knowing that you own a car that could actually be repaired should it have an issue one day since the manufacturer of said car still makes its parts and has individuals trained to service it in more than 1 out of 50 states…then STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM THIS CAR AS POSSIBLE!!!
