2021 Toyota 4Runner
@60k mikes update - everything I wrote previously still stands. I’ve done some mods like 2.75in lift (really eliminated the massive nose dive at stop sign). Now I’m only getting 18mpg top due to the lift, oh well.
Couple minor complaints - deadman shake at 60mph…that’s just never goes away no mater what we did, realignment tire balance etc. apprently that’s known.
Field of view is … somewhat poor, maybe where I sit but ceiling feels low and cut on corners make it harder to see.
Gas cap…no lock.
Here than that it’s a solid truck.

I knew exactly what I was getting. Bought with 30k miles (former rental) baseline SR5 AWD with maintenance record. So far I drove 8k miles in 7 months and I’m happy with my choice. It’s a solid old school body on frame SUV. 2021 model has some modern-ish tech, which I didn’t really care too much. Toyota and most Japanese car companies are all behind on infotainment so don’t expect much.
As far as driving, it’s a truck. It rolls and nose dives. That’s expected. It’s a big box sitting high with 12 years old engine with 5 speed transmission, it’s naturally thirsty. I have punched 22.1mpg on Highway but normally I get below 20mpg on daily drive.
It really shines driving off-road and that’s the big selling point of this truck. We don’t have huge boulders or Forrest here, instead we just have muddy pit l, beach, and swap but it does really well with just some aggressive tires (if I were living in mountain or desert I would have spent another $4k to get a TRD)
I’ve read lots of poor ratings from professional magazines and even disappointed owners, (any given time most dealership has one or two 4runner with low miles), but all those negative reviews could be avoided if they understood that this is an early 2000 technology truck. It will likely be around for good 10 more years because it’s simple, reliable, well built, and matainainable ride.
If you just want an aggressive looking mall crowler then just buy any crossovers in the market and you will be happier.
Because it met my expectations I am happy owner (& I choose this truck before everyone will be forced to drive EV…)
