2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class
Struggled with finding a replacement vehicle for our beloved 2013 Toyota Highlander that took the brunt of abuse from the dual kid booster-seat phase of our family life. Since we had bought the Toyota, I bought a CPO 2014 E350 sedan that we’ve had now for 4 years. The E350 was my first MB and has been a dream to own. So MB was at the top of my list for the Toyota replacement. Given cost, … we shopped everything under the sun from $100k down. At the end of the day, only the 2020 GLS in second-row bench seat configuration would do. Nothing could match it in an overall satisfaction category. We now have nearly 20k miles on it, and have zero complaints. It’s a dream to cruise down the highway in, it’s super easy to navigate the Costco jungle, and with the combination of the turbo and 48v mild-hybrid system the 3.0 I-6 engine is deceptively powerful, there is truly 0% need for the V8 unless of you just want to have it. But note, one of the differences is weight between the two engines. The I6 configuration feels almost tossable and easy, not lumbering and heavy, even though it is a very heavy vehicle. We average about 24mpg fully loaded down on the highway.
We had one “assembly” issue with the drivers window motor. But considering the car is totally new from the ground up, and the boys and girls in Alabama were trying to build them during a freakin’ global pandemic lockdown - I cannot complain as MB fixed it with absolute ease. I also have one of the first Mk7 VW GTI’s produced from the Mexico factory (2015) and it too had a couple of minor glitches to correct, which they did early and it’s been perfect for 6 years and counting now.
End of the day, if the GLS is in your eyesight, then it’s going to be tough to beat it. I personally recommend the 21” wheels as they really make the car look great. We’ve not had any issues with our wheels and we’ve hit some nasty potholes already. True, the factory tires (p-zero) won’t last much past 25k on normal driving, but they can now come with Michelin too, which have tread warranty coverage to 40k. We will be replacing ours with the Michelin’s this year
We get compliments from many over the car. Lots of interest in it from the luxury SUV crowd, and MB fans in general. We will be having this car for a very long time because there is just nothing else out there that we like as much.
The tech is great. Yeah takes a day or two to get used to it all, but once you’re past that, it’s just second nature to use it on the fly. The interior materials are superb and will clearly last a very long time, and the design is timeless both inside and out, not gimmicky or “modern for the moment”, just timeless. It’ll look fantastic and fresh in 5 years from now, not tired and overly duplicated.
