An absolute bargain & still competitve

I went to the 2023 Auto show the day before I test drove and bought this car, especially since some notable new cars were present like the redesigned Honda Accord. I was also interested in some luxury cars like the Acura TLX since those aren’t bad deals with depreciation. I left hating the new Accord (the materials are OK- better than the last gen- but the interior was … austere/unwelcoming in design). The TLX felt a little cheap inside for the price (the doors felt surprisingly hollow) and the infotainment was a mess. I sampled many other cars too, the only one I really liked being the VW Arteon.
The next day is when I went to see the Mazda6 Signature that was for sale CPO nearby with only 4K miles at a great (for the market) price. As soon as I sat inside I knew this car was the right fit for me. It has a beautiful interior that puts many many luxury cars to shame in design and materials.
After two months with the car I have only small complaints with it: there is faint static from the audio system even when it’s muted, apparently common amongst Mazda’s with the Bose systems; the door armrests could be more softly padded; piano black on the center console is a dumb choice. But the good far outweighs these: the interior design materials are just fantastic and tastefully chosen; the seats are amongst the most comfortable I’ve sat in with great shaping, strong heating/cooling functions, and lovely leather; the infotainment while dated is feature rich, reliable, has a nice screen quality, and is very easy to use (I love the rotary controller and how the shortcut buttons intelligently remap for CarPlay); the Bose system is good with an excellent sound stage- though a subwoofer would round out the sound more nicely. The interior has all the needed buttons and very little is buried in the screen's settings, which is a true relief in this day and age. The climate control is particularly attractive;y laid out without compromising on usability.
The car is full of details that showed Mazda cared about making the top trim special. Even the front seat backs got an exclusive design (!) that’s very premium looking. The window frames are fully covered so there’s no exposed exterior paint facing the interior. The door pockets and footwells (front AND rear!) are absurdly well lit at night with ambient lighting. They even went as far as to cover the trunk hinges completely AND provide a handle to close the trunk- so many cars costing 2x more cost cut on these two items! The only obvious cost cutting (more like balancing here) is the lack of a hydraulic strut for the hood, otherwise this feels like a luxury car through and though.
Nothing about the exterior needs to be said as it’s handsome and elegant, full stop. The paints are all beautiful.
Three quirks of the car's platform being older: the keyless entry has no touch sensor, rather you have to press the button to unlock. This is great to me, as it’s easier to use with gloves in the winter and you can do two stage unlocking from the outside (which is not seemingly possible with a touch sensor), so you can press once to unlock just the driver's door and a second time to unlock them all. Second, the mirror adjustments are not memory linked, which can be annoying if you routinely switch drivers. Lastly, the surround view cameras are far from HD, but let’s be honest- who cares! As long as I can see the parking lines on the camera, it’s miles better than not having it. I use the camera all the time and love it. A fun fact is it can be activated at ANY speed- very useful for proving I'm in my lane when my partner says that I'm too close to one side! I also appreciate that the system comes on-screen automatically when the parking sensors in front detect an object.
A feature here I love is the walk-away auto lock. It beeps when the system will out-lock, and has the perfect timing so you hear it lock as you walk away. And on that, the tone for all the beeps in the car is very pleasant and unobtrusive. I've had friends remark on how gentle they are!
It drives with an excellent balance of composure and responsiveness. It’s just engaging enough to make you want to drive while still being extremely comfortable. The ride is supple yet very controlled though the large wheels allow small imperfections to be felt- the 17” wheels probably are the best choice. Wind noise is nonexistent, road noise depends on the road surface owing to the low profile tires. I intend on swapping on the smaller wheels for noise and ride quality improvements since my area has poor roads.
The driver's assistance is behind the competition: no lane centering, for example, and the auto-cruise control is jerkier than most. But the functions are all non-nagging (the lane keep warning will vibrate the wheel if you choose, rather than beep, which is not always an option in this price range) and well calibrated otherwise. Overall they are pleasant additions and are implemented in such a way that they are in the background and do not detract from the experience like a Subaru's do (SO MUCH BEEPING in the current generation Legacy).
The turbo engine is the the second smoothest I’ve driven but my favorite in terms of calibration. It brings the power on so low that it reminds me of the V8 in my E430, and the transmission shifts fast yet buttery smooth, with shift times so adeptly chosen I haven’t ever thought about them. My city fuel economy has been 22 so far on regular fuel. Suffice to say, this is one of the best gasoline drive-trains in a car south of $60K, you’d need to step up to an expensive luxury car to best it- and even then this will be miles more reliable.
I don’t understand why this car didn’t sell, it’s so much better than the new Accord and Camry in so many ways. But that worked out for me, as it resulted it in being a bargain of a used car.
