2025 Lexus IS
In summer of 2025 I purchased a Lexus IS350 F Sport AWD sedan. I was never a huge fan of Lexus styling and actually think most of their vehicles are unpleasant to the eye but the IS is a rare and very significant exception. Like others I imagine, I was equally attracted to the V6 engine even though I heard repeatedly that it was down on power compared to virtually every competitor's 4 … cylinder.
Now that I own one, I will start with what the vehicle does well: it does indeed look great! But I am afraid that is literally all it has going for it. I will begin with the driving aids: they are completely abominable. Kias and Mitsubishis have more reliable sensors. If a bicycle passes in front of the vehicle while you are stopped at a red light, the sensors will activate. The backup camera is equally useless. The IS350 has automatic emergency braking at low speeds and it is a disaster. Twice the system activated for no apparent reason, giving me quite the scare.
On the tech front, this car is sorely lacking. Even a Civic gives you turn by turn navigation in the center display. To use Apple Carplay you must connect with a wire, which might not seem like a big deal until you realize this vehicle has ZERO cubby space whatsoever. Zero!
Here are the things that will bother you that you won't even think about: the driving position! Lexus is clearly no match for the Germans in this regard. On the AWD model, a hump annoyingly protrudes into the driver's legroom to accomodate the transfer case. The vehicle has seat memory but strangely, I still can't say that I've found a comfortable position. I just came back from a business trip where I was provided a 2024 Audi A4 as a rental and I was immediately comfortable in that car. Despite having 50 less horsepower the A4 also felt noticeably quicker and achieved over 30 mpg, a remarkable feat! The Lexus just doesn't have a good interior layout.
As for the driving experience, the one thing you would expect this vehicle to excel at? The 6 speed automatic could be the worst transmission in any new vehicle. It feels like a transmission from 2010 because it basically is. Hesitation, indecisiveness, all of the things you won't find in pretty much any competitor due to continuous improvement and advances in technology are present in the 2025 IS350. This is NOT a vehicle to own for driving enjoyment especially when the 22 MPG average you will get trails everything else in its class. At least Lexus was smart enough to provide a large fuel tank: with a 17.4 gallon capacity, it is very large and helps reduce the frequency of fill-ups while you are getting this atrocious mpg.
To summarize, if you were in the same position I was and considering this vehicle due to looks and the supposed reliability advantage of Lexus, I urge you to consider your decision very carefully. Do not try to rationalize your purchase when all of the evidence seems to lead you to a different conclusion. There are better vehicles out there, pretty much anything. Even on the reliability front, the Germans have made significant strides and BMW sometimes is ranked on the same level or even ahead of Lexus these days.
