2024 Hyundai Tucson Plug-In Hybrid
We have owned our Tucson PHEV for about a year and a half now, put 19,000 miles on it and are very pleased with our purchase. Our driving styles are conservative. Usually no sudden stops or starts and staying within 5MPH of the posted speed limit. Our typical driving day consists of 50% driving local streets and 50% highway driving. We drive about 25 miles in the morning, charge it when … we get back home, drive another 25 miles in the afternoon and charge it at home in the evening. So during the warmer months, unless we drive over 35 miles at one time, the car runs almost exclusively in EV mode. The Tucson handles about the same as all the other SUVs we have owned (RAV4, Highlander, CRV.) Road noise and comfort is also on par with most mid-sized, mid-priced SUVs we have driven. Acceleration when merging onto freeways is no better than other conventional SUVs. If you punch it to accelerate quickly the ICE engine kicks in so you don't experience the quick acceleration of an EV. Gas mileage is obviously dependent on a lot of factors so our experience may not be typical of the average PHEV owner. Our worst gas mileage was 29 MPG on a trip driving 75 MPH into a slight head wind. Our best gas mileage was 312 MPG when we only occasionally had the ICE kick in during a 2-month period in the summer. For 7-8 months when it's fairly warm in the Twin Cities our gas mileage typically runs in the 100 to 150 MPG range. During the winter the gas mileage has been around 50 MPG. I was surprised to find that the Tucson runs in the EV mode on and off even in temperatures down to 0 degrees F if I keep the cabin temperature at 64 degrees. However, if my wife is driving and blasts the heat at 72-74 degrees the EV mode never kicks in. So, if you like a toasty cabin temperature, don't expect the Tucson to run in the EV mode. The only idiosyncrasy I would mention is what happens if you accelerate quickly, like when merging quickly onto a freeway. If the ICE kicks in, even though you eventually reach a cruising speed and are no longer accelerating, it won't return to the EV mode for several miles. This is true even though the EV battery has sufficient juice. The service manager at the Hyundai dealership gave me a reasonable sounding explanation why this is not abnormal, but I'm not an automotive engineer so who knows. Fortunately, the Tucson stays in EV mode if you accelerate smoothly onto a freeway. We have had no issues mechanically with the Tucson. The only issue at the 19,000 mile check was that the oil pan was dripping some oil, but that was fixed under warranty. The tire tread depth at 19,000 miles was 6/32" for all tires so I figure they should last 35-40K before needing to be replaced. No other issues to report. In summary, the Tucson has been a great PHEV for us. Having a charger in our garage and being able to charge the car mid-day has allowed us to run it in EV mode much of the time. We love being able to take the occasional long trip and not have to worry about finding a charger. This may not be the ideal car for a person who doesn't have ready access to a charger or who frequently drives long distances and rarely uses the EV mode. In that case a hybrid might be a better option.
