2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Just purchased my first Jeep and got a 2021 Grand Cherokee Laredo with the V6 with the tow package. My previous car was a 2018 GMC Acadia FWD with a 4cyl and my 965 lb. bike + trailer maxed out its towing capabilities. I have been very pleased with how easily the Jeep tows this setup. Less than a week after I took delivery I traveled across country and racked up over 5000 mi. On this … trip I learned there are a lot of things the Jeep does very well. It's very easy to drive for long periods of time (I got over 500 mi. to a tank so I didn't waste a lot of time stopping for fuel). It handles nicely and even averaged about 22 mpg. Overall I'm happy with my purchase, but I did have a couple issues. The first one that I noticed is the headlights are always on in Auto mode. I took it to jeep before I left and they replaced the HVAC module but it still didn't work. They had to open a techline case with Jeep and still haven't come up with a solution. This is a minor issue, I can still operate the vehicle just fine with out automatic headlights, but when you buy a new car you want everything to work as it's designed. The second issue was a little more serious. My vehicle is equipped with Park Sense (in reverse only). This is where the vehicle will apply the brakes if it thinks your going to back into something, sounds great right? That's what I thought until it activated when I was all alone in a big gravel parking area. This also might seem like a minor inconvenience until I put it in drive and realized it wouldn't move forward either. I was essentially stuck in neutral and the engine would just rev no matter which gear it was in. I understand why it stops the vehicle from backing up but there are no sensors on the front of the vehicle so why would it stop me from going forward? After cycling the ignition on/off 5 or 6 times it finally reset and allowed me to move the vehicle, but I really wasn't happy about the thought of possibly getting stranded. When I got back to my cabin I read everything I could find on Park Sense and found I could disable this feature with a button on the center console. The next time out I figured I was safe incase it decided to act up again. When it did happen again I pushed said button to no avail. I was still stuck. It took me 30min. of searching in the vehicle settings menu to figure out how to turn off the automatic braking feature while leaving Park Sense on (now it just beeps if it thinks your going to back into something, but won't apply the brakes). Again with some trial and error I have found a way to get around these issues but, It's a new car. Everything should be working as it's designed. It has been a couple weeks and still no answer from Jeep. I really want to love this car but it makes it hard when things aren't working correctly and there is no answer on the horizon.
UPDATE: Finally got my auto headlights to work properly. Turns out the harness that plugged into the HVAC control module had a bent terminal so they replaced the entire wire harness under the dash and now they work as designed. Also after getting stuck a couple more times, I took a video of what was going on when the Park Sense was preventing the vehicle from moving. I finally got an explanation of what was happening. There is a safety feature called Autopark which prevents the vehicle from shifting out of Park (even if the gearshift is moved it doesn't engage the transmission). 2 of the 3 following things have to be completed or it will engage Autopark. 1-The drivers seatbelt is fastened. 2-The drivers door is closed. 3-The emergency brake is on. When I was stuck in Autopark I was usually trying to move the vehicle out of the way, like I just finished filling up at the pump and wanted to move to a parking spot so someone else could get fuel. When it happened so my seatbelt wasn't fastened. I also didn't shut the door completely and never realized it till a service advisor watched the video and noticed the open door icon was illuminated on the dash when this was happening. Now that I understand what the feature is and know how to use it correctly I have no complaints with the Jeep. Actually the more I drive it the more I love it, which is why I have updated my review to 5 stars.
