3rd Tacoma is best one yet.

2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4dr Access Cab 4WD 6.1 ft. SB (3.5L 6cyl 6M)
I have had a 1996,2006, and now a 2017 Tacoma. All were access cab v6 4x4. This one is by far the best. The ride difference from the 2006 to the 2017 is unreal. It feels like you are riding in a sedan and not a truck. The engine is noticeably stronger than my 2006 which also had a V6. All of my trucks have been manuals. I was pondering switching to the automatic this time but I … was reading way too many negative things about it. The manual on the 2017 shifts amazingly smooth. There is minimal to no driftback unless you are on a steep incline. My 2006 would scream at 70mph. I have to let off the gas on the highway with this one because before I know it I am doing 80. I average anywhere between 18-22mpg depending how heavy I am being on the pedal. The fuel mileage is the only negative thing I can at about the truck, and it is not even that bad. The seats are comfortable and controls are simple yet efficient. I would highly recommend the truck to anyone looking for a beefy midsize. I would go with the manual as it is a breeze to drive.
Exactly what I wanted

2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4dr Access Cab 4WD 6.1 ft. SB (3.5L 6cyl 6M)
2.5 years later update: Excellent vehicle still. I'll be keeping this one for sure.
I just traded up my 2011 Tacoma 4cyl, 5 spd manual, 4x4 to a 2017 TRD Sport 4x4. This truck is great so far. I'm currently getting over 21mpg in the city. The engine and trans are set for economy, not power, unless you use the ECT power button. I haven't experienced any issues with my Tacoma as I've … read about here. This is our 6th Toyota (my third Toyota truck). I have never had any reliability issues with any of the Toyotas I've owned. I had my first Toyota truck (1982 SR5 4x4 pickup) for over 13 years before I sold it. I expect to get at least 10 years out of this newer one.
Update: 8/2022. Truck is very reliable and comfortable. Currently averaging 17-120 mpg depending on conditions (I did go up one tire size which had an affect on the mileage). Still very happy with this truck.
2017 Toyota Tacoma - Tranmission Problem

2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4dr Access Cab 4WD 6.1 ft. SB (3.5L 6cyl 6M)
I am very disappointed in my 2017 Tacoma. Because I only drive manuals, I went with the Tacoma and ordered a TRD Sport PRO with a 6 speed manual. When going up a slight incline in first gear, the truck wants to drive in reverse. So, I have to avoid driving on a incline and make sure that I drive on a flat surface only. This is a problem because my drive way is on a slight incline. I … have to drive in reverse to leave my own property. I have taken it to the dealership twice for this problem and they say that they can not find anything wrong with it. Since I do not have many miles on this truck, I will sale it because I am afraid to drive it. I wish there are more trucks that come with a manual.

Which Tacoma does Edmunds recommend?
We bought a TRD Off-Road V6 4x4 for our long-term test, and we'd do it again. With strong go-anywhere credentials thanks to its all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, locking rear differential and crawl control, it doesn't break the bank like the admittedly impressive TRD Pro. The cab comes equipped with the 7-inch Entune touchscreen navigation system, and a single comprehensive option package can add a tilt-and-slide moonroof, heated seats, automatic climate control, rear parking sonar, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Available in the full range of bed, cab and transmission choices, too.

Driving
3.5The Tacoma steers and handles with quiet confidence on the road, but the V6 engine and its automatic transmission don't always respond quickly to inputs. All Tacoma 4x4s benefit from Toyota's off-road design emphasis, but the TRD Off-Road is particularly capable when the pavement ends.
Comfort
3.5This new Tacoma rides smoother and quieter than the one it replaces. The climate control system is refreshingly simple and effective. The seats are accommodating, but the high floor tends to make tall drivers wish for more adjustability.
Interior
4.0Attractive interior is nicely laid out, with easily understood and effective controls. The cabin has plenty of space up front, but tall folks may disagree. Biggest shortcomings are the relatively tall step up to the cab and an odd driving posture, both side effects of the need for ground clearance.
Utility
4.0The Tacoma's composite bed has lots of smart cargo management features, and there's a decent amount of places for items in and around the cab. Its tow rating isn't quite class-leading, but it isn't far off the mark. Child seat fitment in the crew cab favors forward-facing seats and boosters.
Technology
3.5We generally like the touchscreen audio system because it has large virtual buttons and employs knobs for volume and tuning chores. Supports smartphones with a proprietary Entune app instead of the more universal Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Lags behind Honda Ridgeline in advanced driver aids.
