I've had my Tacoma for over a year.
Very reliable, low maintenance truck.
Plenty of torque and nice off-road
features - especially the
electronically locking rear dif. (TRD
Package) Several warranty items covered
without question from the dealer.
Great exterior lines from the side.
High ride stance. Good exhaust tone.
The front end design is lousy. The
Tacoma has what is the ugliest front
grille on the market. Leather steering
wheel. Seats are a bit flimsy. Bed
needs to be 3" longer so that a bike
will fit with the tailgate up. Gas
mileage stinks Clock placement -
obstructed by steering wheel.
Now have 27699 on this truck I bought in
July of 2002 The AC compressor quited
down around 9k miles and works well.
Developed the rattle in the dash around
7500 miles. Dealer fixed it on first
try. Getting 19-21 around town with K&N
air filter and ECT button off. Best on
the road has been 24.3 MPG. Seats seem
to be getting soft but still
comfortable. Very happy with it and will
consider the 2005 Taco or Tundra when I
retire. Very satisfied with dealer and
Performance, and solid ride on
backcountry roads. Handles well on highway.
Paint thin on rear panels and tail gate,
as well as the bed. Do away with clock
as ya can't see it anyway.
I wanted a reliable 4x4 truck that
would last at least ten years. This
truck has now 30K miles and there is
nothing wrong with it. I have taken it
off-road a couple of times and have
been very confident in it. It is
clearly not a truck that you want to
abuse too much off road though. After
off-roading once I had to have the
alignment done because it was thrown
off. Even though the ride is somewhat
rough and sometimes bouncy, the truck
has very good handling and it is sure
on its "feet".
My favorite feature is the one-push
four-wheel-drive engager (with the self-
The dashboard needs to be re-designed a
little. The clock, for example, is
blocked by the steering wheel.
2002 Tacoma double cab is very
practical and capable, but mine has
been a disappointment. I've had
numerous problems with a rattling
dashboard (10+ trips to the dealer and
it still rattles). Also, I just had a
fuel tank recall and had to get some
sort of metal shielding installed.
Water pump leaked and had to be
replaced. Another large water leak
into the cab from the engine cowl -
this thing is in the shop yet again
getting all the carpet and jute
It's a great truck ... when it's not in
the shop. Based on my experiences over
the past 1.5 years, I would not
recommend this truck.
Overall, it seems to be a good design
that is suffering from poor quality
control at the assembly line.
