Test Driver Ratings & Comments

Acceleration commentsNot much to do here as a driver - the 4Runner responds only slightly to brake torque at launch. I tried one run with some initial spin, but that proved slower due to the big bog once the traction came back.
Braking ratingAverage
Braking commentsLong idle-stroke and dramatic dive make the 4Runner feel sub-optimal. However, average stopping distances and good fade resistance are confidence builders.
Handling ratingPoor
Handling commentsSlalom: ESP not truly off, hence identical results at the limit. If however, you manage to get into an ESP-provoking maneuver, the system is so reactionary and heavy-handed that steering becomes ineffective as the brakes go to full-stop ABS-pulsing mode. This makes the vehicle go straight, rather than correct/coerce to the intended path. Skid pad: ESP threshold is set to the exact limit of tire-howling understeer. Observers witnessed inside front tire hovering over the ground. Steering is highly isolated -- almost numb.
