Test drove all of the competition and for the first time I enjoyed the Tacoma more than the rest. I will say that the Ranger was a close second
The good:
Engine and transmission are tuned wonderfully , especially considering how clunky the V6 and 6 speed of the outgoing model were. Power is always on tap down low where everyday driving occurs. I haven’t had a stumble or any weird … shifts.
Buttons galore. If you have fingers you are probably a fan of buttons. Every function has a physical button and is intuitive to use.
Safety sense 3 is executed well. The car from the factory with all driving assistance on can basically drive itself. If you aren’t a fan of Nannies like me then they are easy to disable permanently.
Seats are miles ahead of the last generation. The lower back portion is firm and supportive without awkward placed lumbar. The base of the seat is soft which is the ideal setup. The seat bottoms are fairly long and tilted which offers tons of thigh support that feel similar to my M3.
The ergonomics are excellent and you can drive with your arm rested on either the center console or the door rest comfortably. I’m 5’11” 180lbs so represent an average man pretty well.
The handling with the new coil setup is a drastic improvement from the leaf sprung trucks of yesterday. The Electric steering is linear and smooth which makes highway jaunts low effort.
The Cons:
Toyota gets away with giving you less features in some areas than others because frankly they don’t have to , they know they will sell based on previous track records.
The gas tank is too small and is only good for about 300 miles combined.
The rear seat is still laughably small. Don’t plan on stuffing people back there regularly unless you just don’t like them.
The air dam is goofy but removable . I took mine off immediately and noticed no issues with hitting window sticker MPG.
Overall very happy with the Taco so far and looking inside the engine bay it looks fairly straightforward to maintain. They stuck with an air to air intercooler and traditional oil pump, plug changes should be a breeze, and it has that usual Toyota build quality where everything is neatly placed and routed with conduit.
