2026 Rav4 - extremely difficult to own at first.
The Bad: When we picked it up at the dealer, they did not provide any training or set up at all, said it was new and many things changed, and they had not been trained yet. After having if for a month, watching about 25 u-tube videos, reading the manual cover to cover, we cannot get some of the functions to operate correctly. Cannot … set up profiles, consistently, cannot get drive recorder to operate, among many other issues. Whenever we drive it is constantly beeping or sending warning messages to the dashboard. Phones will not link up all the time. The real problem with the 2026 RAV4 is it is just too complicated with too many features that interlock with other features to operate. You will constantly reboot or change modes to try to get the most basic functions to work on the center monitor. It's the interconnectedness that is really complicated. Some features are by profile, others not, etc. Also, multiple dash lights and Info messages come on at random times and the glossary of what each light means is about 12 pages in the manual. Basically there are about 83 warning lights at last count to figure out. Next, there are about 103 combinations of options of what to show on the main center dashboard 3 video screens. Once you set it how you want, you cannot lock the view and any slight touch to the steering wheel control sends you into one of the other 103 configurations and you may never find your way back. The rear turn signals are red instead of amber, which is really bad for safety. If you like spending your weekend sitting in a car in the garage to try to figure out how to get it programed, then this is the car for you. We got the kids to help after a few weeks, two engineers and a high school kid, and they did get some more things set up, but they were stumped also on many things, and pointed out that the owners manual contradicts itself in several places. The headlights at night are bad, very limited illumination on low beams. Curious to see how IIHS rates these current headlights. The auto high beam is great and that helps a little. The map lights are some kind of joke, the button has no tactic feel and is impossible to find especially at night (of course), we keep sending out SOS instead of the map light, and the illumination is less than a candle in a rainstorm, so we keep a hiking headlamp up front if we need a map light at night. If you get the limited trim, it comes with 2 key fobs and a credit card key. The dealer said there was no credit card key at first, then we showed them the manual and in about an hour, they "found it." At our first oil change, hopefully the dealer can fix/set/program some of the features that are not working consistently or properly.
The Good: It does get good milage, and the center monitor is fast compared to other cars. It has a real temporary spare (not a can of stop leak) in the trunk unlike many other small SUVs which is fantastic. The jack and tools are very hidden in another compartment at the rear of the back seat. The Heads up Display (HUD) is great and works well, including map directions integrated. The seats are comfortable and the ride is good. We have the big tires (not by choice) and the ride is still good, not too harsh. Cameras are great, and self parking is very very good. The "hey Toyota" voice control works really well, best we have seen in a car and the separate microphones in the headliner (one driver and one passenger) really help by adjusting temp for example on the side asking for it. Pretty neat. The view out the sides and back are greatly improved over the earlier Rav4s. There are two clear coolant tanks under the hood, one is for the hybrid system and one for the radiator, that was new to us. The steering and turning radius is very good, and the driver position is high up. The ventilated front seats work well. At first we thought we would really miss the fan knob and vent selection knob. Though they should have put those were the silly ride mode buttons (that we will never use) are, what Toyota did works better than we thought it would so the absence of knobs is not really a big deal. Basically, you set the HVAC to Auto and it coordinates the fan speed, vent selection, heated steering wheel, and seat heaters/coolers all in one and the integration works well to keep you comfortable. They have tactic temp control (blue/red buttons) for each side enabling quick changes so you don't really miss the big knobs FYI- If you are like us and just use the 30 second button on the microwave at home and press it as repeatedly to cook things, this is basically the car equivalent of that, direct, simple, and easy. Build quality was good, body panel seams were uniform, and there are no rattles yet. I am worried about the sunroof quality/longevity which is about as big as a twin bed, but so far so good. It has good power, and freeway onramp acceleration is good.
Bottom line: We are enjoying the 2026 Rav4 Limited and would buy it again, but strongly suggest you get every tech savvy person you know, buy them some beers, and have them come over and try to program it when you first get it. If I could send a ticket to IT to come fix this thing like at the office, I would have submitted about 27 tickets so far!
