2027 Subaru Outback

The 2027 Subaru Outback is a midsize two-row SUV with a rugged exterior look and all-terrain capability to back it up. If you want something bigger than Subaru's Forester but don't want to spend a bunch to get a three-row SUV, the Outback is a pretty compelling compromise. Subaru redesigned its Outback last year, giving it a taller, less wagon-like body and a completely revamped interior that's roomier and quieter than before. It also features an improved infotainment touchscreen interface. Considering all of the changes for last year's Outback, we're not expecting anything major to come down the pike for the 2027 Outback.  

Edmunds spotlight: A trail-ready trim

One of the seventh-generation Outback's best upgrades was the addition of the Wilderness trim, a model equipped with a comprehensive set of performance- and style-enhancing off-road features. The Outback Wilderness starts with the upgraded engine — a 260-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder — and adds 17-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires, selectable drive modes, hill descent control, and a raised suspension with a substantial 9.5 inches of ground clearance. The model also receives unique front and rear bumpers, a bespoke grille design and copper exterior accents. 

Competitors to consider

The Honda Passport is among our favorite two-row midsize SUVs. Like the Outback, it's easy to drive and offers excellent utility. If frequent off-roading is in your plans, you could also check out Toyota's 4Runner or Land Cruiser. They are more rugged than the Outback but not as comfortable for daily driving on the street. 

The 2027 Subaru Outback is a comfortable SUV that you could easily live with every day. It also doubles as an adventure rig for the occasional off-road excursion.
