Bought a Subaru because I thought they were supposed to last forever. Everything was fine right up until the warranty ran out at 60,000 miles. Then brakes and exhaust needed replaced. Spark plug wires needed replaced. At 80,000 miles the head gaskets were leaking oil and needed replaced - $1,800. At 130,000 miles the transmission coolant lines into the radiator were rusted out and I had to replace the radiator and lines. Spark plug wires needed replaced again. At 165,000 miles the head gaskets were leaking again along with the transmission lines again, and it needed a catalytic converter, exhaust pipes and both mufflers. Estimate of over $7,200 to repair (and that is with a couple of hundred kicked in from the dealer). Needless to say, I have a very large lawn ornament now. Won't trust Subaru again.

First one went 180,000 miles, then head gasket leaked. Decided to trade in. Did the RAV4, CR-V, Forester loop, and returned to the Forester. The dealerships were the most professional of any brand. I will take it on long dirt roads for fishing, and love the better clearance. No longer a "small" SUV! At least not on the inside. My priorities are value, reliability and gas mileage. Two out of three ain't bad, but I haven't taken long trips yet, so maybe mileage will improve. It's got a miles-per-gallon display, which is nice. Same giant moonroof. Styling is sharper, and I'm glad they didn't slope the roof any more.

Horrible transmission

It seems that any time I change speeds suddenly, my car revs up and feels like it's stalling. The first time it happened, I was on a major highway and went to pass in the left lane when suddenly the car revved really high (as if I threw it into neutral and stepped on the gas pedal) and wasn't moving! I saw a car coming up on me in my rear view mirror and thought, "that's it, I'm a goner!" Just today on my way to Subaru for the seat belt recall, as I pulled out onto the highway, the car revved to 5 and it felt like the gas pedal was stuck. When I slow down to make a turn at a corner, the car jerks when I put my foot back on the gas. 3x back to the dealer; they say that's how this trans works!

I am 84 years old and have been driving for 60 years. This Forester; 1. overall a plain car for $25,000 2. Bad gas cap place;near bottom of car 3. backing up is not smooth.Bad. 4. Heating and air poor. 5. Dashboard bare;cannot see clock or temperature because no contrast; poor colors used. 6. no light in glove box. 7. Cargo door is not well planned;clumsy to use. 8.Rear view mirrors block view; and not heated. Overall not a good choice. I made a mistake. There other short comings but no sense in going on.
