The 2020 Ascent is Subaru's best three-row SUV to date. We like its standard all-wheel drive, useful technology features and solid build quality. A roomier third-row seat and a smoother-shifting transmission would make it better, but overall this is an appealing family hauler.

Ascent strengths outweigh noisy compromises
Subaru's Ascent made quite a splash when it came to market last year. It managed to combine all the personality and quirks Subaru owners love with the newfound practicality of three-row seating. Available in a seven- or eight-passenger configuration, the Ascent can also hold up to 86.5 cubic feet of cargo when you fold down its second- and third-row seats. Or if getting out in nature is your thing, the Ascent obliges with standard all-wheel drive and 8.7 inches of ground clearance.

Powering the Ascent is a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that makes it both quick and able to tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. All that power is sent to the ground through a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). And as a bonus, the big, boxy Subaru still manages to get a 23 mpg combined rating from the EPA.
But the Ascent has some downsides, mainly the elevated noise levels. It comes from the tires as well as a somewhat pervasive droning engine noise you hear when pulling up longer grades or accelerating briskly. Also, the third-row seat isn't as roomy as the third rows in some rival crossover SUVs. But if adventures with friends or family takes a prominent place in your life, the 2020 Ascent has a lot to offer and holds its own in a very competitive segment.
Edmunds Expert Rating
edmunds TESTED
by the Edmunds Experts
Average
7.6
out of 10
We drove the 2020 Subaru Ascent on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance: Turbo punch, surgy CVT needs finesse
7.5/10
How does the Ascent drive? The Ascent's turbocharged engine packs a strong punch, making it one of the quicker vehicles in the segment when you mash the gas. For typical driving, however, you'll need a fine touch to make the CVT automatic work smoothly. Even moderate throttle inputs result in surging acceleration, which can make passengers uncomfortable.
The Ascent has standard all-wheel drive and includes software-controlled traction and hill descent control. Combine those features with its 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and you've got an effective combination for taking on snow and dirt. The Subaru really is a four-season SUV.

Comfort: Mostly inviting seats, noisy ride
7.5/10
How comfortable is the Ascent? The Ascent's interior seating is comfortable and inviting for the most part. Third-row passengers might long for softer seats over longer distances. The climate control works well to keep the cabin environment pleasant, and rear passengers will appreciate the ceiling-mounted vents that provide good coverage.
On the downside, driving over cracks and seams in the pavement sends a lot of tire noise and vibration into the cabin. There's also the issue of engine noise, which can grow from a muted hum to a loud groan as the rpm climb to redline. The Ascent doesn't feel floaty, but overall ride comfort falls below the class leaders.

Interior: Easy usability for seven or eight
7.5/10
How’s the interior? Get the seven-seater for full-size adults or eight-seater for cargo and/or kids. The Ascent is an approachable and easy-to-use crossover, and it fits drivers both big and small. Everything is clearly labeled, though there are a few acronyms that may require you to crack open the instruction manual.
The large windows and door-mounted side mirrors allow excellent side visibility. A high-def rear camera helps supplement an already large rear window. The one downside is the way the hood slopes down, which makes it hard to place the front edges of the bumper.

Technology: Starlink touchscreen and driver aids shine
8/10
How’s the tech? Subaru's Starlink system is in full force here. It features a crisp and responsive touchscreen and multiple ways to integrate your smartphone, and it is easy to use with minimal setup. A smattering of USB ports helps keep your passengers' devices charged.
Our test car was equipped with a responsive and easy-to-use touchscreen navigation system. Otherwise, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and can handle nav needs for those without it. Subaru's EyeSight suite of driver aids is comprehensive and standard on all trim levels. Adaptive cruise control works all the way to a full stop.

Storage: Cargo space is average, not generous
7.5/10
How’s the storage? The Ascent has an average amount of space for cargo, with 17.6 cubic feet behind the third row and up to 86 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. The third-row seats have to be folded from the back, and the second row must be done from the rear passenger doors. The resulting load floor isn't perfectly flat but should be sufficient in most cases. There are a lot of places for small items up front, but few are generous in size.
Most Ascent models provide 5,000 pounds of maximum towing weight. Standard Trailer Stability Assist helps minimize excess trailer sway. Towing requires the addition of an optional trailer hitch assembly that includes a wiring harness, which can be covered by a panel when not in use.

Fuel Economy: Solid mpg and no premium needed
8/10
How’s the fuel economy? We achieved 23.6 mpg on our 115-mile test loop, which slightly betters the Ascent's 22 mpg combined estimate (20 city/26 highway). Our best overall tank was 25.2 mpg after logging nearly 200 miles of highway driving while our test average came out to 21.7 mpg. That's not bad, and neither is the engine's requirement for 87 octane ― no premium required.
Value: Build quality and standard AWD wins
8/10
Is the Ascent a good value? The cabin's interior design looks a bit busy, but its build quality is on par for the segment and price-competitive. Also on par are the warranty and roadside assistance offerings. As for value, you get all-wheel drive as standard, which impresses buyers who regularly deal with inclement weather.
Wildcard: Comfortably capable three-row family hauler
7.5/10
The Ascent is comfortable, fun and capable when the going gets dirty. It's also smartly designed to carry four adults with all of their gear. Opting for the second-row bench seat makes for easy child-seat duty. Think of it as the golden retriever of three-row crossovers.
2020 Subaru Ascent trim level differences
The 2020 Subaru Ascent is available in base, Premium, Limited and Touring trim levels. All use a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine (260 horsepower, 277 lb-ft of torque) paired with a CVT automatic. All-wheel drive comes standard across the lineup as does Subaru's EyeSight driver assist technology, which bundles many of today's current advanced driver safety aids. Compare the 2020 Subaru Ascent trim levels in-depth.
Which Ascent trim does Edmunds recommend?
We think the Premium offers a nice mix of standard equipment along with an agreeable price. Making it more appealing over the base model are features such as heated seats, a larger infotainment display and a 5,000-pound tow rating. The Premium also comes with smaller wheels and tires than what's offered on higher trim levels, which could go a long way toward improving road noise over broken pavement.

2020 Ascent still hits a sweet spot, 4 years later

2020 Subaru Ascent Touring 4dr SUV AWD w/7-Passenger (2.4L 4cyl Turbo CVT)
I have now owned the 2020 Touring for 4 years, and it is still a car I am very happy with. Folks who complain about the accelerator being too responsive must be lead footed- for me its responsiveness hits a sweet spot and is one of the main reasons I picked the Ascent over its competitors, which I found to be, for lack of better words, lumbering and clunky in their responsiveness. I'm … also baffled by reviews that the engine is "loud" or that there is too much noise inside the car. I just called a friend using the hands free setup while driving on the highway and we both commented on how you could hear a pin drop during the call. The Ascent feels like a premium quality car and in particular I love the balance Subaru has struck in building in so many standard safety features without them feeling distracting or obtrusive. On fuel efficiency, with a significant amount of local and city driving, it has consistently come in on the lower end of Subaru's reported range, with significantly higher fuel efficiency on highways. Based on my experience so far, I can confirm I am thoroughly satisfied with the new 2020 Ascent and am happy to give it an emphatic five stars.
Update: I have now owned the 2020 Ascent for four years and almost 50,000 miles. It has met or exceeded all of my expectations during this time. I use it to commute into NYC where the poor road conditions often require an all terrain vehicle, on ski trips when the roads are iced over, when the rain is coming down so hard that there are flash flood warnings, and on backcountry dirt and rocky roads, and at all times have felt in control and safe. I truly love this car, and look forward to continuing to drive it for many years to come. I remain a thoroughly satisfied customer.
Update: I am now nearly 50,000 miles into owning my Subaru Ascent. I continue to love this car, as well as the Subaru service center that takes care of it. I find my Ascent to be dependable and comfortable, and currently my main issue that that my wife now wants to use it more and more for group excursions with our son and his schoolmates. I continue to give the Ascent particularly high marks for control in inclement weather and rough terrain.
Me happy

2020 Subaru Ascent Touring 4dr SUV AWD w/7-Passenger (2.4L 4cyl Turbo CVT)
A previous reviewer questioned owners who claim the Ascent is noisy, and at 3K mi so do I. Tire noise is annoying over older and coarse concrete pavement on I-5, but other than that mine is quiet until 80 mph. I wouldn’t drive faster than that in a vehicle this big anyway.
The new boxer engine’s torque is pretty amazing, especially when stabbing the throttle at 25 mph. Forget paddle … shifters; just floor it! My four banger boxer engine also is vibration free — because it’s a boxer design, I’ve read.
Boxer engine design also means lower center of gravity, which improves handling. My Ascent’s ride & handling seem very good to excellent for such a tall vehicle.
Right now I’m getting 23.5 mpg over 1300 miles; other tankfuls have been as low as 19 mpg. All on cheap 87 octane. Pretty sweet for a torquey turbo engine IMO.
Great all rounder, great value

2020 Subaru Ascent Touring 4dr SUV AWD w/7-Passenger (2.4L 4cyl Turbo CVT)
I’m very happy with this car. It may not be the most exciting category of cars to shop in, but it’s an excellent daily companion which will make your life easier. As a daily driver for commuting to work, driving kids, dogs, shopping- it’s perfect. When it’s time to hit some trail heads for hiking, biking, or camp sites it’s a natural. With the seats folded down you can throw in an air … mattress and camp right in the back. I’m continually surprised how comfortable and luxurious his car feels, and that’s coming from a BMW. It’s quiet, smooth, and has a very solid build quality that makes it feel like a much more expensive branded car. It’s really a tremendous value for the money. The eye sight features work very well and has made this the best highway cruiser I’ve ever had. If you’re concerned how the power train sounds on paper, don’t be. It works extraordinarily well. The car review industry hates CVTs, but this is the best I’ve driven. It’s so smooth and unobtrusive you’ll soon forget its there. The power is good. Great actually considering it’s a turbo 4, as a daily driver it has plenty of power. I disagree with Edmunds assessment of abrupt throttle response and being noisy at times. Fuel economy is OK depending on how much highway you do. If I do all local suburban driving I’ll average about 18.5 mpg, on highway it does fantastic, so if I have a tank that I mix even a few highway trips in, I’ll beat 20 mpg. The AWD system in this car is unstoppable. I’ve owned a lot of cars and this car is a great all rounder that does everything very well.
Update: 15k miles in and still no issues, still a great car, still recommend.

2020 Subaru Ascent Touring 4dr SUV AWD w/7-Passenger (2.4L 4cyl Turbo CVT)
I have the Touring Model with as many extras as I could get. I've owned the Mercedes R350 (my favorite car ever) and two xc90s (old model and new). The Ascent compares favorably to all of them when you factor in cost and maintenance. I've never felt safer in a car going faster than 80 MPH. The ride is smooth and quiet (I'm not getting the noise complaints). The only real issue is that … the hood vibrates up and down at speed and can be distracting for a few minutes. Subaru could tighten the latch down better. The gas mileage is ok, but I wish it was better; it's still better than the XC90. It's a little sluggish getting up to speed, but I kind of expect that as well. The interior is just as nice as a luxury car and my kids love the USB ports and in-car WiFi. The third row is not for adults, but unless you are driving a Suburban or Expidition that is going to be the case anyway. The car is a bargain at half the price of most luxury brands with many of the same touches. I"m happy I bought it and would buy it again.
