Which Dawn does Edmunds recommend?
Edmunds' Expert Review
Rolls-Royce automobiles are known for the way they seclude occupants from the hardships of the roadway. Quiet, effortless and serene, driving a Rolls-Royce is more Bodleian Oxford Library than Wall Street trading floor. The 2017 Rolls-Royce Dawn is no different, but it adds the ability to open its fabric top, allowing driver and passenger alike to bask in the sun, or moonlight, and watch the scenery smoothly whiz by.
You would be mistaken to think the Dawn is just the convertible version of the hardtop two-door Wraith. Although they have similar powertrains, the Wraith has more power (624 horsepower versus 563 hp) and Rolls-Royce says 80 percent of the body is different. Thankfully, Rolls-Royce spent a lot of time and effort to get the undeniable differentiator, the convertible fabric roof, just right. With the roof taking 22 seconds to open or close at speeds of up to 31 miles per hour, Rolls-Royce calls the process a "silent ballet" due to the lack of noise during operation.

Features & Specs
Our experts’ favorite Dawn safety features:
- Adaptive LED Headlights
- Motorized reflectors keep the headlight beam pointing in the direction of travel, increasing nighttime visibility.
- Rollover Protection System
- Should the Dawn roll over, a concealed roll bar, combined with a single-piece windshield frame, deploys to protect occupants.
- Satellite-Aided Transmission
- GPS works with the transmission, letting it shift early or hold a gear, depending on driver behavior, for a curve or hill ahead.
The 2017 Rolls-Royce Dawn is full-size four-seat convertible luxury coupe. It is not for the faint of heart. Not because of its price or its power — both of which are prodigious indeed — but because of the attention you'll receive while driving it. This is one of those cars in which just getting in and out is a photo-worthy event, especially because the Dawn has large reverse-hinged doors that open from the front and hinge at the rear. This makes stepping out of the car like stepping down from a throne.
All of the Dawn's information, navigation and technology equipment is standard. It features a 10.3-inch color display that can be hidden behind a panel that blends with the rest of the interior. The display is not even touch-compatible, as Rolls-Royce believes the possibility of fingerprints on the screen would be a huge faux pas. Data entry into the system is done via voice control and what's called the Spirit of Ecstasy Rotary Controller. Users of BMW's iDrive system will find the operation of the system very familiar because Rolls-Royce's system is heavily based on it. Otherwise, radar-based adaptive cruise control, camera-based lane keeping assist, and infrared-based night vision are other technologies that are seamlessly integrated into the leather- and wood-adorned cabin.
The cloth convertible top uses French seams, which are virtually invisible, and lacks the protrusions and lumps found on lesser vehicles. This means the shape of the car can be really exact, and the smooth surface means minimal wind buffeting. The top is, of course, electrically actuated, and it takes about 22 seconds to fully open or close, and does so silently. It can even be operated at speeds of up to 31 miles per hour.
But the real fun with Rolls-Royces is in configuring them. Numerous options are available to explore, and you can specify colors on specific leather and wood panels, headliner materials and even the steering wheel. Multiple hood ornaments, called the Spirit of Ecstasy, are also available; you can even get one with uplighting.
With the myriad of options available, let Edmunds help you configure the 2017 Rolls-Royce Dawn of your dreams.

Should I lease or buy a 2017 Rolls-Royce Dawn?
Is it better to lease or buy a car? Ask most people and they'll probably tell you that car buying is the way to go. And from a financial perspective, it's true, provided you're willing to make higher monthly payments, pay off the loan in full and keep the car for a few years. Leasing, on the other hand, can be a less expensive option on a month-to-month basis. It's also good if you're someone who likes to drive a new car every three years or so.
