Overview
The Porsche Taycan might be why the phrase "decision paralysis" exists. It is a luxury performance EV available in a dizzying array of configurations: as a sedan or a wagon and with rear-wheel drive and 402 horsepower or all-wheel drive with anywhere from 402 hp to 1,019 hp — the latter available with just two front seats despite still having four doors. However it's specced, though, the electric Taycan is a Porsche in every way. The range-topping Turbo GT with Weissach package is one of the quickest production vehicles ever.
Edmunds spotlight: Cross Turismo vs. Sport Turismo
Porsche calls the wagon/hatchback version of the Taycan the Cross Turismo or the Sport Turismo — but why the difference? The Cross Turismo sits slightly higher and feints at SUV-dom with a thin band of black plastic trim around the lower body and wheel arches. The Sport Turismo crouches lower to the ground and does without the cladding. Both are offered exclusively with all-wheel drive, but the Cross Turismo is available in four trim levels covering a large spread of power outputs and price points, while the Sport Turismo is only available in the performance-focused GTS trim.
Competitors to consider
There are so many Taycan variations that most buyers will find at least a couple of choices that fit their needs without even considering other vehicles. Outside of the Taycan lineup, the Porsche's most direct competitor is the related Audi E-tron GT, which tends more toward long-distance comfort than the Taycan. Shoppers who will regularly shuttle taller backseat passengers will want to consider the BMW i5 or i7, as well as the Mercedes-Benz EQE and EQS. The Lucid Air and aging Tesla Model S are both spacious and comfortable and the range champions of the class. While the Taycan maxes out at 315 miles of range, the Lucid offers up to 512 miles, and even the 1,234-hp Air Sapphire betters the longest-range Taycan by more than 100 miles.
Edmunds Expert Rating
Performance
While speed and acceleration aren't an issue, we were surprised by the Taycan's middling testing performance on our skidpad and handling course. The car posted 0.89 g worth of grip on the skidpad, which is well below rival EVs, and the handling wasn't particularly balanced or inspiring. If you want the best-driving Taycan, we highly suggest going for options like torque vectoring, active suspension and the Sport Chrono package. On the street, the Taycan is easy and smooth to drive, though we still wish Porsche would offer one-pedal driving like all the competition.
Comfort
We wish the climate controls were less cumbersome. It's fine having the temperature and fan speed adjustments on their own touchscreen, but adjusting air vents on a screen is never a good solution. The air conditioning blows cold and the heated seats warm up nicely, but it's all a bit more difficult to adjust and use than it should be.
Interior
Porsche's controls are easy to reach, but much of what you need to do (including adjusting the climate control) is done through the touchscreen. The interface is responsive, but it will take a bit of time to learn all of the ins and outs of the system.
Technology
Porsche doesn't offer much in the way of standard driver aids. Instead, it makes features such as adaptive cruise control separate options. It's not great when less expensive rivals offer a more robust list of standard features. On the upside, our test car was fitted with most of the available driver aids, and we had no complaints about how they worked.
Storage
The Taycan has easily accessible Isofix anchors for car seats, though the roofline and limited rear space make putting larger seats inside somewhat cumbersome. Larger rear-facing seats might require the passenger to scoot their seat forward.
Range and Efficiency
We measured consumption at 31 kWh of electricity used for every 100 miles of driving, which is significantly better than the EPA's 38 kWh/100 mile estimate. Even better, Porsche has upgraded the charging speed for the Taycan, with a peak charging power of 320 kW. Owners can take even more advantage of 350-kW DC fast-charging stations.
Value
Wildcard
The Taycan's design is handsome and sleek, but it's no longer as eye-catching as it was when it debuted. It's decidedly Porsche without looking like an awkward, overstuffed 911 like Porsche's first sedan, the Panamera. What really sets the Taycan (and Porsches in general) apart is the level of customization you can get into. There are optional paints, wheels, upholstery and trim to tailor a Taycan to your heart's content. For the right price, Porsche will paint your Taycan in just about any color you'd like.
2026 Porsche Taycan trim level differences
The 2026 Porsche Taycan is available as either a sedan or a wagon/hatchback that Porsche calls the Cross Turismo (except for the GTS trim wagon, which it dubs Sport Turismo). The sedan has 11 trim levels — base Taycan, Taycan Black Edition, Taycan 4, 4 Black Edition, 4S, 4S Black Edition, GTS, Turbo, Turbo S, Turbo GT and Turbo GT Weissach package — and the Turismo has five trims: the Taycan 4, 4S, Turbo and Turbo S Cross Turismo and the GTS Sport Turismo. Power levels grow tremendously from the base to the most powerful Taycan, the Turbo GT.
Which Taycan trim does Edmunds recommend?
The Taycan is an EV for enthusiast drivers, and the GTS offers the best blend of power, handling hardware and price within the lineup. It enjoys a healthy horsepower bump over the 4S at a significant savings compared to the Turbo and includes handling hardware that elevates the Taycan's driving dynamics as standard equipment. The GTS is also available in both sedan and wagon body styles and is the only one of the latter without the goofy "I'm a real SUV!" black cladding.
