The 2017 Porsche Macan blends luxury and performance in the body of an SUV. As a daily driver, the Macan stops and gos with the best of them. This Porsche anyone would be comfortable taking on the 12- mile climb with 156 turns up to Pikes Peak, with three friends and their luggage on board. It's the promise of adventure that makes the Macan so desirable, and this SUV truly delivers.
Porsche offers a unique engine for each trim level in the Macan. The base Macan has a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. It is enough power to launch the Macan from zero to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, according to Porsche. The Macan S comes with a 340-hp 3.0-liter turbo V6, which completes the same task in 5.6 seconds based on our tests. The GTS gets the same engine tuned to 360 hp, and Porsche says it will hit 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. Topping the lineup is the 400-horsepower 3.6-liter engine of the Macan Turbo. It needs just 4.4 seconds to reach 60 mph. All trims come standard with all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Where the Macan slips is fuel economy. EPA estimates range from 22 mpg combined (20 city/25 highway) for the base model down to 19 mpg combined (17 city/23 highway) for the S, GTS and Turbo.
Quick acceleration isn't the Macan's only trick. You would be hard-pressed to find another compact luxury SUV as enjoyable or engaging to drive as the Macan, in any trim. The steering, through which its 911 lineage is apparent, is brilliant. And yet the ride remains reasonably comfortable, even when it's equipped with larger 20-inch wheels.
We are not as impressed inside the cabin. We can't complain about the look and feel. We love that the dashboard is reminiscent of other Porsche models. But in terms of practicality the Macan does not stack up as well to other SUVs in this segment. Its cargo area is smaller than those of competitors for one. And for another, it does not have the most comfortable backseat.
That said, we still consider the Macan the overall car to beat in its class. And Porsche offers it in the aforementioned trims: Base, S, GTS and Turbo. The Base starts with plenty of luxury equipment. The S adds a V6 engine and upgraded brakes and wheels. The GTS gets an air suspension and more luxury sport hardware.
