2023 Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Pure Electric Ultimate 4dr Hatchback AWD (electric DD)
This is a great EV! Loves: 0-60 in 4.5sec—all the power is there if you need to pass a car. Very balanced suspension leaning more on comfort. One-pedal mode is set perfect. Has all the regenerative braking needed to stop the car without needing to use the brakes. Great looks—especially the sloped rear with its deck spoiler flanked by dashed LED taillights. Large moonroof to let in … natural light. Small footprint allows for ease with parking in narrow spots. Speed limit in instrument panel. Thor hammer daytime running lights plus LED headlamps and fog lamps. Fast charge at 150kW DC and 11kW level 2. Door sensors for keyless lock/unlock at all 4 doors. Trash bin at center console. Heated rear seats with center passthrough (perfect for hockey sticks). Thigh extensions on front seats. Safety technology—great blind spot warning and rear cross traffic warning. Google voice commands. Auto-folding mirrors when car doors are locked. The stop charge button at charging port is very useful. Kia EV6 requires you to stop charging via its app before you can remove the charge cord. Stitching on the faux leather vegan seats. Trunk cover lid fits under trunk when you don’t want to use it or need it removed for taller objects. Automatic parking brakes aligned with Park selection. Disengages when you shift to reverse or drive. 250 kWh free using Electrify America. That’s like 4 free tanks of gas. Charging cables included. Hooks for grocery bags in trunk and for purse on glove compartment door. Pilot assist works great compared with simple cruise control—keeps you within your lane and maintains set distance from car in front and able to speed up or slow down as needed. Can be improved: Apple CarPlay needs to be wireless. Instrument panel bare when hooked to CarPlay and using Waze—should be able to show Waze in instrument panel. Only looks nice if using car’s GoogleMaps navigation. Center instrument needs to show ETA when using GoogleMaps so that center screen can be reserved for entertainment (music) info. Have to switch to GoogleMaps on center screen just to see your ETA. Driver profile doesn’t change if car wasn’t locked after previous driver—we don’t typically lock car in home garage so if my wife drives next, car still operates under my profile even though she is using her profile-linked key. External door handle lights to light path to car doesn’t come on with proximity. Requires you to pull out your key and hit unlock button for it to light up. My previous Infiniti had proximity sensor so that puddle lights come on when you approach the car. Needs more side bolstering front seats. Needs firming steering—firm setting adds no detectable difference. Range should appear in instrument panel instead of just percentage battery left. You have to look for range in center monitor. Odometer not shown unless you select trip info screen. Rear seat doesn’t recline. Crystal shift lever only available with wool seat option. Topographic dash panel only looks good at night when backlit. Looks like cheap plastic in daytime. Need way to turn off foot activated trunk opening or reserve only for opening. It closed and hit my wife’s head twice when loading groceries because she stands too close and inadvertently activates it. Would like a start/stop button vs seat activation. Manual control takes multiple screen touches to get to settings, controls, to turn off vehicle if want to sit while parked or if leaving dogs in car to run out and pick up something but want to keep AC running. I can’t even see how progressive rear turn signals look because if I step out to look, the car shuts off. Haven’t even been able to check out how headlights look when turned on. Poor rear view our of rear view mirror. Needs to be camera linked display for rear view mirror. Needs option to have default camera as 360 when reverse gear is selected. Have to alway manually change from rear camera to 360 each time since I prefer 360 view. Split screen for center monitor to display multiple content (eg music and navigation). Needs heads up display for a $62k car. Homelink—hard to find garage 2 button at night. Stalks on either side of steering wheel needs backlighting. Eliminate center tunnel in rear seats. Need a 12v outlet in trunk for electric cooler for tailgating. Very small glove compartment. Digital clock only in center monitor and in very small font size. Miss my ventilated seats (especially more useful than heat seater in California). More range than EPA rated of 226 miles. When charged to 80% as Volvo recommends, that’s less than 200 miles of range. Better efficiency needed since it’s a 77kWh battery but only pushing 200 miles of range. HVAC has auto setting but you still need to manually adjust fan speed. Would like a dedicated physical button for turning on/off one-pedal mode vs scrolling screen to get to it. Rid of the lower body black plastic cladding. Keep it all body color. Spare tire. Same size front and rear tires to allow for rotation of tires.
