Solid drive, but so so technology and design

Jan Weber, 03/02/2026
2026 Mercedes-Benz GLC GLC 300 4MATIC 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 9A)
Here the good, the bad and the ugly: Good: extremely solid Germanic feel, reminiscent of the high quality Mercedes Benz of the past. Very quiet. Outstanding Burmeister sound system. The bad: I have been averaging 31 mpg in combined city/highway in conservative driving. At a time of climate change and when a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid gets a combined EPA rating of 39 mpg, this is … disappointing (the GLC uses a mild hybrid system, why not a more substantial hybrid like the RAV 4). The MSRP of $61k for the Pinnacle version seems very steep. And why do you get plastic seats at this price point? The interior design looks odd will strangely oval pink illuminated vents, lots of distraction reflections of pink lights everywhere. The classic business class Germanic no nonsense interior design of old is gone. Mercedes now seems more Virgin Atlantic than Lufthansa in terms of style. (I have owned four so far, and am not happy about this.) The ugly: The use of the screen for many controls is outright dangerous. And the many haptic buttons don’t work at all when your fingers are wet and work poorly when they are dry. Mercedes, did you ever test this?! Summary: solid feel, excellent sound system but questionable interior design and the dangerous reliance of screen based controls for frequently used functions and haptic buttons that don’t work well are big let downs. And then there is the price of $61k…
