Four Stars But Unfortunately, I Don't Love It

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Coupe GLC 300 4MATIC 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 9A)
Was excited to get one of the first 2024 GLC Coupes off of the lot. I'm a 54 year woman. I'm calling this out now because I really do think that my age and gender are part and parcel of why I'm only giving this car three stars.
What do I love about it: It's a beast. It literally looks like the Jason Stratham of SUVs. The drive. It literally floats like it's on a cloud. The 2024's … are almost silent in comparison to the loud engine of it's predecessors. The seats are sumptuous and comfortable. I love the new technology and cameras that allow me to see literally through the hood with visibility from all angles of the car, including under the front end. This is a super nice feature. I love the HOLD feature on the brakes where I can pump them twice to engage the brake at a light or in stopped traffic. The gas range-the gas range-the gas range! I use this car to drive back and forth from LA to Palm Springs and with the new mild hybrid system in the 2024s, it gets approx 500 miles on the highway in one tank of gas. Also you don't have to connect phone to cable to use Apple Car app anymore. AND it comes with an actual spare tire-you'll be hard pressed to find a spare in any car these days. So there's all of this to love.
What I don't love about it: This is fundamentally a car for a man-period. I don't like stepping up into this car-it's not fun. Coming from a Tesla Y, which has essentially identical dimensions, I was surprised with the step up on this car in comparison. This is ok when I'm wearing sneakers or sandals, but no bueno with heels of any size. The new touch buttons on the steering wheel vs the switches and buttons on the previous design are TERRIBLE. It's way too easy to graze one of the buttons and change your radio station or screen. It's ridiculously sensitive. The rear window visibility is the poorest of any car that I've ever owned-including a 2023 C300 convertible. That's right, the convertible has better rear window visibility than this monster. Burmester-they haven't released many that are fully loaded with all the bells and whistles. I was forced to choose between one with Burmester sound and essentially nothing else other than heated seats OR one with the driver assistance and AMG nightline packages. I chose the latter, but am reminded daily that it's not a Burmester sound system. The mouse/track pad in the center console is gone in the 2024s in exchange for a center screen that is 3-4x larger. I would have preferred both. I also HATE that Mercedes has decided to eliminate the traditional gear shift and go with putting it on what should be the right hand turn signal...I understand why Tesla and other fully electric brands/models do that, but I will never understand why Mercedes does it on all of their vehicles. I knew this going in from my C300, but worth mentioning that I don't like it. I should also mention that the new console configuration makes it feel like a tight fit for the drive and passenger. This is actually an upside for a smaller frame woman, but my 6'1 200 lb husband is like a pig in a blanket when he drives my car and says it's too snug for his taste.
Coming from a Tesla Y, what's interesting is that the 2024 GLC 300 Coupe has ALL the great technology that I loved from the Tesla Y (except being fully electric and identifying objects and cars on the screen nav-which I didn't love anyway). I love how it drives-it floats down the highway. But I don't like that I feel like I'm stepping up into a Range Rover and I don't love that I have to be precious of how I handle the steering wheel out of fear that I'll change the screen or radio station. It is also a very masculine car overall, not for a dainty lady. My options were the BMWX4 and the GLC300 coupe. I'd still chose the GLC300 coupe, but for the stepping up factor. The X4 step up was lower than the GLCs.
