Beautiful Car but Nightmare Reliability

Emil Sliman, 08/25/2026
2025 BMW M5 Touring 4dr Wagon AWD (4.4L 8cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)
I want to start by saying that Momentum BMW in Houston has been excellent throughout this entire experience. Their sales team, finance team, and service department have worked harder on my behalf than I could have asked. Everything I'm about to describe is about the vehicle BMW manufactured and the response from BMW of North America. It is not a reflection of the dealership. I purchased … my 2025 BMW M5 new in March 2025. At the time, it was the fulfillment of something I'd worked toward — BMW's flagship M Performance sports sedan, 717 horsepower, approximately $140,000. I've been a BMW customer for five years and have purchased eight of their vehicles. I say that because what follows is not the reaction of someone who expected perfection. It's the reaction of someone who expected a manufacturer to stand behind its product. The problems started at 1,910 miles. The car went in for its scheduled break-in service on March 31st, 2025 — eleven days after delivery. Two days later, the coolant expansion tank was leaking. Not a slow drip. Leaking visibly from the top of the tank. The system had been overfilled. That was the first repair. One day out of service, first coolant event logged, before I had barely put 2,000 miles on the car. The car ran through the summer without a major issue. In August 2025 I brought it in for an oil service. In October 2025, around 12,000 miles, I was back at the dealership for a TPMS malfunction warning. While it was there, a manufacturer safety recall was identified on the vehicle — parts weren't available yet so it couldn't be completed. Two more days out of service. In February 2026, the car spent nine days in the service department for a persistent rattling and clattering noise coming from underneath that had been present for months. The noise was documented. BMW opened an internal case around it. It was never resolved. To this day it has not been fixed. Then the engine started failing. March 13th, 2026. Roughly 16,900 miles. The Drivetrain Malfunction warning came on while I was driving. The engine began to sputter. Power dropped significantly. I had the car towed. The diagnosis was a failed fuel injector — specifically a DME Solenoid Valve Injector Actuation failure on Cylinder 7. One injector replaced under warranty. Six days out of service. March 26th, 2026 — one week after getting the car back — the coolant expansion tank began leaking again. This time with a burning smell detectable while driving. The tank and its cap were replaced. The cooling system was drained and bled twice. Eight more days out of service. Second coolant event. May 4th, 2026. Back on a tow truck. Drivetrain Malfunction again. This time it was Cylinders 6 and 8 — two injectors on the same side of the engine as the first failure. Both replaced under warranty. Seventeen days in the service department before the car was returned to me on May 21st. Four days later I was calling a tow truck again. May 25th, 2026. Third drivetrain failure. Same warning. Same sputtering. Same power loss. The car has not left Momentum's service department since that day. As I write this review in August 2026, it has been 73 days. During this current visit, the following has been performed: the engine ignition wiring harness for the entire Cylinder 5-8 bank was replaced. Four additional fuel injectors were replaced — bringing the total across all visits to seven injectors replaced on one side of this engine. The coolant expansion tank was replaced for the third time. Beyond those repairs, BMW of North America directed the installation of what I was told is some kind of drip pan or catch modification on the vehicle. I was given no documentation, no specifications, and no real explanation of its purpose. What I can say is that BMW NA apparently felt a custom modification was necessary on top of everything else that had already been done. To summarize what this engine has required in under 21,000 miles: seven fuel injectors replaced, one complete engine wiring harness replaced, three separate coolant expansion tank replacements, a BMW NA directed modification of unknown specification, an unresolved rattling noise that was never diagnosed or repaired, a safety recall that took months to complete, and a TPMS electrical fault. The repair order from this visit carries the official status: VEH. DISABLED. Here is what I find most telling. After all of that — the harness, the injectors, the third expansion tank, the BMW NA modification — the car has continued to generate drivetrain fault alerts through BMW's own automated monitoring system, called Proactive Care. July 23rd. July 30th. August 6th. Three separate alert emails in two weeks, each flagging the same drivetrain fault code, each sent while the car sits in a service bay with every repair supposedly complete. BMW's own connected vehicle infrastructure keeps telling me something is still wrong. The total time this vehicle has spent in service departments across all visits: more than 125 days. In sixteen months of ownership. Under 21,000 miles. On a $140,000 car. I submitted a formal repurchase request to BMW of North America with complete documentation. Their response was $6,000 described as goodwill compensation. I declined. They followed with an offer to help me trade into a different vehicle. I declined that too. I asked them to repurchase a vehicle that has spent 125 days being serviced. That request has been denied twice. The situation is ongoing. I'm not writing this out of anger. I'm writing it because I searched for reviews like this before I bought my M5 and didn't find one. If you're considering this vehicle, you deserve to know what one owner's experience has been — every repair, every day in the shop, every tow truck call, documented exactly as it happened. Make of it what you will.
