Overview

Written by automotive expert Dan Frio

4/1/2026

The second-smallest SUV in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, the 2026 GLB blurs the line between the subcompact and compact SUV worlds. The GLB's distinctive boxy design actually delivers more maximum cargo space than the larger GLC, at a price closer to its smaller sibling, the subcompact GLA. The GLB keeps costs down with less interior polish — no sumptuous standard leather here (although still optional) — but still carries Benz hallmarks of comfort and technology. It even offers an available third-row seat, which, while basically sized only for children, gives the GLB impressive versatility.

Edmunds Expert Rating

edmunds TESTED

by the Edmunds Experts

Excellent

7.8

out of 10

We drove the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLB on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.

Driving experience

8.2/10

How does the Mercedes-Benz GLB drive? In our testing, the GLB 250 reached 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, which is properly quick and at the top of the class. When you stomp the pedal, there's a noticeable delay before it starts accelerating, but with a lighter pedal application, it gets underway smoothly.

The GLB isn't particularly exciting to drive, but it is more capable than most SUV owners will need. Its brakes are easy to control for smooth stops and impressively strong when you need to make an emergency stop. Around turns, the GLB feels sure-footed and planted, and it has a smooth ride.

The tall windows around the GLB provide excellent outward visibility. One minor downside: The sun visors are too small and don't provide full coverage when moved to the side of the vehicle.

The GLB's driver assist features are particularly good. The adaptive cruise control works great whether you're driving in dense highway traffic or cruising on the open highway. The lane keeping assistance can be a little too aggressive in trying to keep you in the lane, but that situation is pretty rare.

Comfort

7.9/10

How comfortable is the Mercedes-Benz GLB? The GLB has a smooth ride and front seats that remain comfortable for hours at a time. We also like how the cabin stays pleasantly quiet on the highway, even on rough road surfaces. The climate control system works well on both hot and cold days to keep you cozy at your desired temperature.

The GLB's ride height and tall door openings make it easy to get in and out of. There's no need to step up or stoop down — just slip on in. Once inside, you'll find that all of the controls are logically placed and, after a very short time, you can operate them without having to take your eyes off the road. The GLB's boxy shape affords generous space compared to most of its competitors.

For family duty, the GLB should work out OK. A rear-facing infant safety seat can fit, but only if you keep the rear seats slid all the way back and the front seats in a reasonable position. We did notice that some car seat bases we tested were a bit hard to latch onto the GLB's car seat anchor points.

In-cabin tech

9/10

How’s the tech? If you're the type of person who really enjoys your music, spring for the optional Burmester audio system, and thank us later when you've indulged in the clear highs and punchy lows. Even aside from that, the GLB gets high marks for its tech features. It comes with Mercedes' MBUX infotainment system and includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Wireless charging is also available. Overall we think the MBUX system is the gold standard these days. It's easy to use, with multiple ways to control functions. Voice controls are accurate, even if they take a heartbeat or two to process.

Storage & cargo

9.6/10

How’s storage and cargo? The GLB's boxy design makes it a leader in the segment for utility. It has a maximum capacity of 56.7 cubic feet, with a respectable 24 cubic feet of space behind the second row. This drops to 5.1 cubic feet if the optional third row is in use, though.

A low liftover height and power liftgate make loading straightforward. The second row slides and reclines, so you can prioritize either passenger legroom or storage. The adjustable load floor also helps accommodate taller items.

Minor drawbacks include the lack of remote seat releases in the cargo area so you have to manually fold the seats from the side doors. But interior storage is great, featuring large door pockets, a sizable center bin and secure cupholders for smaller beverages.

Value

6.4/10

Is the Mercedes-Benz GLB a good value? The GLB splits the difference between the smaller and more affordable GLA and the slightly bigger and more expensive GLC. It's an appealing option as long as you know what you're getting. Buying one with a ton of options significantly inflates the price, and at that point you should consider the more refined GLC.

Compared with other extra-small luxury SUVs, you pay a little more for the GLB, but you also get more in terms of space, performance and comfort. As with most models in this class, the quality of materials feels a bit cheap in some areas, but overall the GLB feels worth its price.

MPG

5/10

How’s the fuel economy? The EPA says the GLB gets up to 28 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That's a little above average for the class. Based on our real-world driving, we suspect the EPA figure should be achievable with a light foot.

X factor

7/10

The GLB's upright and boxy styling gives it a more traditional and utilitarian SUV look, which we like. Is the GLB fun? No, not really. But that's mostly because we've only tested the GLB 250 so far. The AMG variant should satisfy drivers seeking more excitement.

2026 Mercedes-Benz GLB trim level differences

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLB is a five-seat small luxury SUV available in three trims: GLB 250, GLB 250 4Matic and AMG GLB 35. An optional third-row seat adds seating for two child-size passengers. Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (221 horsepower, 258 lb-ft of torque) paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive for the GLB 250 or all-wheel drive for the GLB 250 4Matic. The AMG GLB 35 gets a more potent version of the same engine (302 hp and 295 lb-ft). Compare the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLB trim levels in-depth.

Which GLB trim does Edmunds recommend?

The GLB essentially comes in two versions: the standard GLB 250 in either rear-wheel drive or 4Matic all-wheel drive and the high-performance AMG GLB 35 with standard all-wheel drive. We suggest sticking with the regular GLB 250 (go 4Matic if you need all-wheel drive). It's well stocked with features from the factory and offers plenty of options for personalization. The AMG GLB 35 sounds good in theory and is worth considering if you truly want a sporty, boxy compact SUV. For the extra cost, though, we'd step up to the classier GLC.

Competitors to consider

Small luxury SUVs are a competitive group and include the BMW X1 and Volvo XC40. Both are smaller than the GLB and neither offers an optional third row, but both are classy and, in the BMW's case, sporty and fun to drive. All are priced about the same, making the GLB a bargain if space and utility are priorities. Sizing up to more traditional compact SUVs (typically about 5 inches longer than the GLB), our favorites include the value-packed Genesis GV70, BMW X3 and the larger Benz GLC.

Edmunds spotlight: Hybrid and electric coming soon

An all-new GLB is on the way, so the 2026 GLB carries over with only minor changes. A new Sun & Sound package bundles a panoramic sunroof with a 10-speaker audio system, and the AMG Design Package Plus combines gray paint, black trim, and matte black 19-inch wheels for the high-performance version. If you like today's GLB, you might find a bargain as Benz makes room for the forthcoming next-gen model in 2027. The redesigned GLB will be longer and roomier, which may address a chief complaint about the current model: stingy third-row room. It will also come in all-electric and hybrid versions. Details are scarce, but the hybrid will likely use the same 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder found in the related CLA. The electric version will offer both rear- and all-wheel drive, up to 349 horsepower, and will be rechargeable at Tesla Superchargers. It will also feature a bounty of tech, including three dash-spanning displays and a ChatGPT virtual assistant.
