Compact SUV with Third Row and Modern Interior

Lichking, 12/20/2020
2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class GLB 250 4MATIC 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8AM)

Purchased the 2021 GLB because I was looking for a compact-sized SUV with third row seating for kids. The GLB also has a modern interior, I like the turbine-style air vents and the "surfboard" infotainment and instrument cluster. Despite what others have said about navigating the infotainment, I don't find it hard or cumbersome to use. However, one nuisance is having to scroll to the radio presets every now and then on the instrument display, sometimes it doesn't save the last setting. I also like the large panoramic sunroof although that's a $1500 option. The engine is peppy and the car is nimble (for an SUV) and has great class gas mileage. There are a few annoyances though: 1) The 2nd row seats don't fold all the way down IF the seats are moved to the front most position (the headrest hits the front seats), this makes it even more difficult to climb into the 3rd row; 2) Android Auto and Apply Carplay doesn't take up the full 10.25 inch infotainment screen, Google Maps only displays 7 inches. Hopefully Mercedes will update it to fill the screen. The GLB isn't very stylish, isn't very fast and performance-oriented, and it's not the most luxurious Mercedes; however it offers the perfect practicality. The only competitor is the Discovery Sport which is also a compact, luxury SUV with a third row.

18 months on - A great ride with a cautionary tale

A follow up to my earlier review "A nice blend of space, tech and value". Had this car for 18 months now - finished the first service. All the key points are very valid. The car offers exceptional space for a small SUV, easy to handle, great tech, super boot space. One nagging issue from the start was poor gas mileage. Right from the time we took possession of the car in 2021, we never got close to the advertised gas mileage. I asked about that in the first service check and got no response from the dealer except everything was ok. A few months past first service, the engine light came on and stayed on. We didnt take the car in immediately and suddenly found ourselves with an unreliable engine that died on. On taking it in for service, the CSR immediately mentioned that some GLB engines had faulty engines with leaking cylinders. They took the car in and replaced the engine cylinders as it was within warranty. Since then the mileage is exactly as advertised and the car performance is great. Moral of the story - if you GLB isnt giving you good mileage - get your engine cylinders checked,

I have a defective vehicle built during COVID…Rain water accumulates next to the driver’s side seat. After 6 attempts for the dealership to identify the issue they determined that replacing the door and frame seals would work. Two weeks later the vehicle was ready…Went to pick it up and they did a horrible job on installing the new seals and they cut the headliner too where it didn’t even meet the seal. Needless to say I left the vehicle to redo the repair, in the interim I filed a claim with MB Customer Care… Two and a half weeks later the vehicle was ready… I Inspected the vehicle with the service manager and found a 10 inch circular wet spot on the headliner in the rear of the vehicle. At this point the service manager said that he was going to work with MB Corporate and assigned me to a sales consultant to get me out of the vehicle and into another at my current lease price….Here it is a almost 2 months later my vehicle still has the original leak and the headliner above the driver gets wet and is stained and the electronic display flashes on and off and the AC fan sounds like a jet engine. I cannot get help from Mercedes-Benz corporate or any response from the dealership. This one is a lemon!

As with any family, with an additional kid we had to upgrade from my coupe. We were searching for a SUV that had space for kids and a dog, provided the latest tech and was efficient enough for California gas prices. After doing a month of research, the GLB fit the badge very well. We liked the look and the interior tech. We have had it for a month now. The mileage is as advertised. Not the most performance oriented engine but it can be zippy enough. We got parking assist which is really for city driving and parking. Music system is decent. All this at a price for a loaded regular brand. It’s been a good ride so far.

The vehicle offers the fuel efficiency that I was looking for, though with a TriStar badge. It is fully utilitarian and spacious for my family of 4 for simply transportation and equipment. I'm digging the looks as it is a 'mini me' of our GLS 450. It has near the acoutremont of the 'BigBenz.' It does not have the heft nor occupies most of the parking space as does the BigBenz, which maskes it a pint sized zippy SportUtilityVagen.

We've owned a Mercedes for the last 20 years and when we take our older C-240 in for service, the dealer comments that the newer models don't really compare to the older ones. I agree with him 100%. The 2021 GLB 250 is a nice vehicle, but the quality isn't quite as good as we've come to expect from Mercedes, and some of the comments about engine dependability are worrisome. The engine is noisy, and you can definitely hear the vehicle coming. Some of this might be due to the fact that there's no sound proofing on the engine hood. Just the same, our granddaughter's inexpensive Ford Escape is much quieter. The only problem we've had is with the engine noise and the dealer replaced the belt tensioner which really didn't make an improvement. Gas mileage is great, and the only other valid complaint we have about the vehicle is with the run flat tires. We hate them, and I'm sure the GLB would have a much better ride without them. Overall it's a decent vehicle, but people who rave about it, and think it's the best thing since apple pie, don't have much experience with Mercedes.

Won me over!

My wife wanted a Mercedes SUV and I wasn’t particularly excited about it. We went to a dealer and had no idea the GLB existed. My wife really wanted something smaller and easy to drive. A few years ago we had a BMW X1 and I always thought it was too small. I drive a 4Runner and it’s easy to fit everything in without giving it much thought. Since we’ve owned the GLB it’s won me over. Seats are comfortable, drives nicely and has some useful and cool technology. Ours is pretty well equipped with premium package, 19 inch wheels, panoramic sunroof and the parking technology package as well as a few other individual options like wireless phone charging and some appearance options. I’ve been impressed with the cargo area and its versatility. The sliding rear seats allow for nicely balancing cargo and rear seat comfort. We can take 4 sets of golf clubs and 4 people easily. The fuel economy is excellent. My wishlist for the car would be wireless Apple CarPlay and standard adaptive cruise control. The package that includes adaptive cruise control is pricey and was difficult to find. If you drive much at night definitely get the ambient lighting package. It really sets the interior apart and looks great.

Let me give shout outs to Hal London, my salesman at Mercedes Benz of Doylestown, PA, part of the Faulkner Group, a close knit regional dealership carrying several manufacturers, to Kevin Rogers, the General Manager, who agreed to accept a personal check for the vehicle because I was from out of state and could not get a certified check issued on a holiday, and then surprised me with a further $1000 off the already great price, and to Edmunds for introducing me to the vehicle and the dealership. The car is great. Under 5000 miles, certified, etc. I've driven it about 200 miles, both highway and local. It reminds me of the Volvo V90s that I owned in the late 80s until 2005, after they were sold to Ford. (obviously before the auto electronic revolution) Not a babe-mobile, but strong and sturdy. A Bond girl in the Rosa Klebb mold, but much nicer. (If you get that reference, you're in my age range). I drove 135 miles each way for a test drive and a couple of hours of paperwork. I don't know if I'd do that again, but thank you, Edmonds, for saying it was under 100 miles. I was reluctant to buy online, and in fact I didn't buy until I sat in it and drove it, but I was extremely pleased with the results.

This benz is well-equipped with luxury features and technology. Excellent ride-comfort, compact yet roomy characteristics are definitely the strongholds of this GLB250. MBUX interface is a great system, however, the voice commands are a bit messy at times.

The perfect all-rounder for families. Mercedes has clearly made a mistake in setting in the appropriate pricing policy, since it had to slot it between Gla and Glc. I am a car engineer and I have to say that despite being based on a smaller platform the Glb should definitely cost at least 10 grant more than the Glc. Get one before prices skyrocket!

I’ve owned this car for 5 months and it’s spent 10 weeks in the shop so far. It jerks wildly, lurches & rocks forward & back during normal city driving, rolls uncontrollably at the slightest incline. The service department says it drives perfectly fine as it should. If this is how the car was intended to drive it shouldn’t have a Mercedes emblem. A go kart bought from a gas station parking lot drives better. I’m actually angry at Edmunds for the glowing review that helped inspire me to buy it. It’s garbage.

Doesn't compare to my old 2015 GLK

Overall the GLB is okay, but it's not on par with our old GLK. The fit and finish are not there, panel gaps, the noisy engine, and the ride quality don't compare to the GLK. The interior is cheap, more in line with Chevy or Ford's attempts at doing a luxury vehicle. We thought we were getting a vehicle like our GLK, but it's nothing like the GLK. This vehicle is not worth the 50k we paid, compared to the 45k we paid for the GLK. However it's not all bad, the tech is good and the cargo volume on the inside is great. That is why I gave the GLB three stars. Last words ... don't buy it, if you need a vehicle in this category buy a Lexus or Acura!

A small SUV with big personality

Like a Jack Russell terrier that thinks it's a big dog, this car does a good imitation of a much larger SUV. Headroom is great, love the panoramic sunroof, and appreciate the flexibility to haul much larger loads than one might think possible. Even the back seats, with the front seat adjusted for me (I'm 6'1), have plenty of legroom, and I appreciate the ability to recline and slide the rear seats forward and back. The MBUX premium audio sounds pretty great (not sure the money for Sennheiser upgrade would be worth it). And it drives great, with plenty of pep from the twin scroll turbo to get up the mountain passes in Colorado. The 4matic AWD is the best in the business and gives me confidence in bad weather getting over Loveland Pass. And while some people might not like the boxy, upright stance, I like it - - it's the utility of a GLS-class but 75% of the size. A few possible improvements: the steering wheel extends and tilts, but not as much as I'd like it to. With the seat adjusted for my height I feel like I'm reaching a little for the wheel even with it extended as far as it'll go. The 8 speed DCT works well when pushing it and at cruising speed, but getting around town it's a little jerky. I'd have preferred a 6 speed manual. Yes, with a real clutch! All in all, Mercedes hit one out of the park on this car.

This car has trim lights and an interior that make it look very fancy. However, there’s no real place to put your purse, no automatic back door opener. The one I purchase has needed to have the window replaced and a faulty gas door that left me stranded because I couldn’t gas up. I’ve owned it for less than 6 months.

Good think it is still under warranty! Check engine light according to Mercedes of San Diego Service station, was caused by one of the cylinder head has a leak which resulted in loss of compression. Never had this experience with 6 of my previous Japanese made vehicles from 3 different manufacturers namely: Toyota, Honda, and Mitsubishi. All of my previous Japanese cars reached at least 220K miles before I replaced them. NO CHECK ENGINE issues.
