No real technique to launching the CL550. The best runs were with only mild (1,500-rpm) brake torque. This is pretty much a "mash-and-steer" car. We found no difference between ESP on or off here.
Uneventful stop after stop. Consistent pedal, rapid but nonintrusive ABS operation, and the CL stops in luxury -- just like it does everything else.
Skid pad: Active Body Control (ABC) produces very flat cornering. The non-defeat stability system allows a small slip angle then shuts down the fun in a big hurry. Best numbers were the result of not sliding at all. Slalom: The ABC produces unorthdox body motions which feel bizarre. Its flat attitude regardless of speed or load feels very strange during the transitions, but apparently, it works. The non-defeat ESP defines the limits in this test, as well.
