2003 Mazda Protege5 4dr Wagon (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

Review

Great looking and very fun to drive.
The engine is powerful enough to be fun
with the manual but not so powerful
that it's easy to get into trouble.
Steering and handling are outstanding.
The interior looks much nicer with
leather. It's roomy for such a small
car--I currently have three child seats
in the back. Engine a bit rough and
noise levels are relatively high at
highway speeds. Ride can be busy, but
better than my test drive led me to
expect. Overall, an amazing car
considering how much I paid ($13,343
with ABS, leather, and sunroof).

Best Features

Driving enjoyment, steering feel, quick responses, stylish without any adolescent details

Worst Features

Shorter shifter throw, noise reduction, less engine vibration, better driveability at low speeds, better than 25 MPG in normal driving

2003 Mazda Protege5 4dr Wagon (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

Review

Been looking at PR5s for right package
(automatic, ABS/Side Impact Air,
leather) for 3 months. Wanted silver,
teenage girls wanted yellow, settled
for red. Got $2.5k rebate, $1.5k
Ford "S-Plan" discount and $1k dealer
cash. Acted decisively as loaded PR5
tough to find. Am biased on Mazda since
I own '95 Protege LX, '03 MPV ES, and
this PR5. Owned '86 RX-7 GLX and '93
MPV. Kids love moonroof and I endorse
wind deflector. Handled stiff like
racing car til I lowered tire pressure
from 45psi to 35 psi. Still handles
well though. Engine is strong with
only driver; okay when you have 4 kids
too. Too soon to evaluate MPG, but
guestimate it about 20 in city.

Best Features

Fun to drive. Sexy looks, though I worry about teenage daughters driving red hot "love-mobile" trawling for attention.

Worst Features

Not a complaint, but just a note, the back right seat headrest creates a sizable blind spot. I fixed this by removing it and putting a car seat in that spot.

2003 Mazda Protege5 4dr Wagon (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

Review

I bought in Nov 2002 and have driven my car
on long hauls a lot... despite low-proifle tires
it rides well, handles beautifully and only
needs a good exhaust system to make it
perfect! wish the gearshift action was tighter
and had more power, but aside from that, no
complaints at all! dealers do gouge a bit on
oil changes, so I'm looking for a good
mechanic instead

Best Features

love the handling, brakes (didn't get ABS), steering, 6-CD sound system, monroof and polished rims - great overall package

Worst Features

more power at low and midrange, auto up windows, better shifter gating and less dealership gouging
