2002 Mazda Protege DX 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

Review

Been a great, fun and reliable car. I
really enjoy the look of the exterior
and the interior has done extremely
well. It runs solid and true, may not
be the fastest out there, but then
again that wasnt its goal! If your
looking for something that isnt a
driving appliance- has reliability and
is safe, check this one out.

Best Features

The seats (to me) are very comfortable. Had a bike accident a short while after getting the car, really messed up my back and sitting for a long period of time is tough...but not in this car- great support where you need it.

Worst Features

TIRES...these stock Potenzas wear out quick! I only got about 30K from them when I was honestly expecting around 50K. I have BF good's on there now, so heres hoping for longer life. The stock cd player has a mind of its own at times...otherwise the rest is great

2002 Mazda Protege ES 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

Review

As of today I have 54683 miles in less
than two years and not one problem
with the vehicle. I do primarily
highway driving and I change the oil
every 5k. This is the first Mazda I
have owned and it will NOT be the
last!!

Best Features

For an economy car this thing handles like a dream!! The steering is taught and responsive. I find the interior to be great too. Whether it's the fat steering wheel, or the seat fabric, or the white gauges, I like it!!

Worst Features

Better fuel economy would be nice. I average 25-27 mpg on the highway. The car runs 3600 rpm at 80 mph in 5th gear. So, there's a lot of engine noise and I also think that contributes to the poor fuel economy.

2002 Mazda Protege DX 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

Review

I have a DX with a stick. It's better than
5sp on first generation Legacy, but
worse than that on Civics.

Seats are as good as those on Subaru
and are WAY better than seats on Civics.
Lateral support is okay.

Best Features

rathor sharp handling, great seat comfort, smooth transmission, sleek design, awesomely laid out controls, chilly A/C :-)

Worst Features

I just wish it had an awesome Subaru AWD or at least RWD and the engine was in the back. Lateral support in front seats can be better still. Engine could be quieter. There could be more room made for the left driver's foot to rest.

2002 Mazda Protege ES 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

Review

In LA, with gas pushing past $2.50 a
gallon, I decided to replace my 2000
BMW 325 with something fun to drive but
economical. I was delighted to find a
2002 Protege ES with only 8800 miles on
it at a Toyota dealership. 5-speed,
moonroof, 6-CD stereo - the Protege is
a blast to drive - much more responsive
than the BMW! I wish it had leather but
for the money, I can always add leather
later. Great buy. I've seen people
complain about its gas mileage, but I'm
coming from a premium gas 6-cylinder
BMW that drank $40/tank so this is a
major improvement.

Best Features

Front end styling, dash ergonomics, stock stereo is pretty good, handling, shift is solid

Worst Features

Rear end styling square compared to front, leather option - guess my next car will be the Mazda3!
