2004 Mazda 3 Hatchback s 4dr Hatchback (2.3L 4cyl 5M)

Review

Test drove the new Civic but even though you get a better gas mileage, you have to run the VTEC motor 5-6K RPM to get the power out of it. I am impressed with the amount of space and the reliability (have a BMW X5 4.4 SUV with 11 pages full of service records). The side trim on the door is plastic, and it seems that the air conditioner could use a little "boost" (It seems that recycled air blows just a tad stronger than outside air). It is quiet, the sound is adequate, 6 CD upfront is nice to have, the gearbox is sweet, AUTO/Manual gets the best of both worlds, a 5th gear would have been nice. Performance is good; remember, it's not a race car...turns tight and the fuel economy - I am getting 23 mpg city.

Best Features

Body style, performance, reliability.

Worst Features

Hard to improve the 3 without raising its price...a 5 speed gearbox would be nice, options in interior color (black gets too hot), refine the A/C system.

Review

This is undoubtedly the best car I have ever owned. Performance is excellent, the shift it yourself auto is way cool, easy to use, and fun! Purists should stick to the 5-speed though, which is one of the best I've ever tested. This car looks sooo cool, and gets noticed. Build quality - incredible. Feels like it should have cost at least $25K. Razor-sharp handling, terrific road feel, dead-on straight line steering center, excellent brakes. Interior ergonomics are outstanding. Beats Honda, Toyota (snooze) and Nissan hands-down; styling, performance, versatility, standard features, ergonomics, driving satisfaction (FUN!) value, AND warranty. You've read - now go buy and ENJOY!

Best Features

Sweet factory stereo, 4-speed manumatic tranny, 2.3L VVTI engine, electroluminescent gauges (groovy, baby!), styling, cargo area versatility, standard tilt/telescope steering column, steering wheel mounted audio controls (awesome!) seats, HUGE glove compartment, etc. You get the idea.

Worst Features

Make 4-speed Sport auto tranny a 5-speed. Climate control knobs need to angle up more and protrude more. Simplify dash audio controls. Squeeze an additional 15-20 H.P. out of 2.3L engine, please?

Review

This is the most fun I have had in a car in years. It is compact but still has head and shoulder room for my husband and myself, and we are not small people. With gas prices going up, it is terrific. My son did not want to learn how to drive a manual until he drove mine a few times. Now that is what he wants for his own car.

Best Features

The six cd changer is great especially with the sunroof opened. Also, with the sunroof, there is not much need for a/c. Also, the dash lights are awesome in red. Too many features are great.

Review

I have fallen in love with Mazda, the only thing is that oil changes are the not the cheapest but still not the most expensive. Non-dealerships don't usually stock parts for these cars. But well built great new design. Awesome car.

Best Features

Gotta love the rain sensor, radio station search, seat belt adjuster, pick up speed and fuel mileage.

Worst Features

Definite improvement in leg room in back seat, back door size (bigger people getting out is not so easy), engine size options (more to choose from, larger).

Review

Bought the car new in 12/04. I agree that the car looks nice and is fun to drive. At 34K the transmission was replaced. Now at 36K the car wouldn't start! It has happened twice and the dealer(s) cannot find the problem (roadside assistance will only tow to the nearest Mazda dealer and will not tow back to the dealer where purchased even if its 12 miles farther). I love the car, but I can't zoom if it won't start.

Best Features

With the rear seats folded it has the cargo space of a small SUV. Controls on steering wheel.

Worst Features

Brake dust on rear wheels, more gears for increase MPG, more power/torque, remote trunk release along with one in the car, all wheel drive would be nice.
