preferable to imports, but prefer old school Linco

2023 Lincoln Aviator Reserve 4dr SUV AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo 10A)

I am conflicted with this car so far. I've only had it for 4 months and there are things I like and things I don't. I guess I will start with the things I don't like: First off, I strongly disagree with the Edmunds supposed "expert reviewer" on almost every assertion they make. This is not like classic "Lincoln's of the old days" as they claim. I wished it was. they say the ride is overly soft and uncontrolled. To me, the truth is the exact opposite. While it rides better than a comparable import, Its way too firm where you feel cracks and patches in the road more than vehicles like a Town Car. Edmunds also say the braking is less than ideal. The brakes are totally fine. To put my review in perspective, I prefer the driving characteristics of the classic Lincolns with soft, luxurious ride qualities. I hate the firm springs and rides that are associated with imports brands. while the Aviator may have a smoother ride than import competitors, its still too firm for my tastes. It's somewhat like the ride of a Jaguar xj8L that I had. I can feel more of the bumps and jostles from rough pavement than what you'd feel if you were comparing it to an old school Town Car. Road Noise: again, it's more comparable to jaguar and bmw products we have had. A Continental or Town Car model would be quieter. While there is zero wind noise with the Aviator, you do hear what I can only describe as a escalating & resonating volume of road "din" noise from the tires, that is made worse by driving over course pavement or concrete road surfaces. It's similar to what I experience with another jaguar I own. I do not hear any of this resonating road noise from the tires with a well preserved Town Car that I also have. but i do hear it with the Aviator. One clue is if a car manufacturer has it such that the car radio volume increases automatically to overcome road noise at higher speeds, that is a tip off that noise levels are significant enough where that feature is needed. the aviator has this feature. Again, it seems a tad quieter than the bmw or jaguar, but its not as quiet as an old school Continental or Town Car. Edmunds says the car doesn't have an abundance of head room. Again, more fiction. I am over 6 feet tall and head room is more than sufficient for me in both front and rear seats. I have not tried to sit in 3rd seat. My biggest complaint is the tech features. Edmunds says the "lane keeping assist" works well. My experience with it is totally the opposite on that too. It will careen right over a solid yellow line to the shoulder on a clear, sunny day without activating. but it "usually" activates at times when its not needed, such as when merging across a white dotted line to another lane on the freeway. the dealer say they can find nothing wrong when they plug the car into their diagnostic tool. So I just shut that feature off and leave it off. Another annoying feature found in many cars these days is the auto stop/start which I hate. But 3rd party companies do sell a bypass plug for the Aviator/Explorer that make it so the driver can turn it on and off. Without that plug, you will have to manually go into drive settings and shut if off every time you drive the car. so if you buy one of these cars, I would go online and order the plug and have it installed so this feature will only work if you elect to turn it on and be off when you turn it off. Lets see, what else..., it has front parking sensors which are unduly loud and obnoxious. they are loud enough where if your talking with a passenger, you can't talk over it. its volume cannot even be lowered. I can see whats in front of me and don't need the beeping alarms every time i am pulling forward into a parking space. So far I have not found a way to defeat that yet. Then I find the phone app is pretty much useless. Its much like what is offered on other car brands. you can start and shut the car motor from your cell phone and lower and raise windows with your cell phone etc, and can use your cell phone as a key. None of these features are such that i would ever want to use them. the only feature that would be useful is the GPS thing that is supposed to tell you where the car is located from your phone. So if the car was stolen or towed, you should be able to see its physical location via your cellphone app. but the problem is that it doesn't work as it doesn't update for days at a time. when i looked on the phone to see where it said the car was, it typically shows me where it was and its mileage and gas tank level from a week or many days prior. It had been driven several times since then and no longer at the location the app said it was at. So with the above realizations in mind, I recently just cancelled the My Lincoln account and removed the app from my phone as that app is functionality useless for me. I prefer to just use the key as a key. If they improved the GPS feature and made the phone app contain other features I would actually find useful, I'd reconsider using it. but as it works currently, I don't want to bother with it. What is good is the car has plenty of power. In fact, it probably has too much power and could be a dangerous vehicle to loan to teenage drivers. If you have kids, there is a way to program the car to not exceed certain speeds which i would definitely use if I were allowing my kids to drive that car. the overall quality of the car is good. The car seems to be basically mechanically sound and likely to last a long time with its traditional "non transverse" mounted engine and rear wheel drive layout. If anything will give trouble its likely to be related to excessive electronic gadgets found in the higher optioned versions of this car. I'd get the lowest level Reserve 1 to lessen the risk of tech related snafus. But there is no doubt in my mind the overall upkeep and repairs will be significantly less costly and less frequent compared to the various import brands i am familiar with. In the long run, this car will outlast a bmw and will not be needing costly mechanical repairs typical of imports. Most of the recalls on this car are for non essential things such as the rear view camera might occasionally show a blue screen or flicker if the cell phone is in a certain proximity when reversing. To me, thats nothing. I worry about such things as the bmw cars with a cooling systems in them thats largely made of plastic components that will cause several thousand dollars to repair if one of the plastic parts crack and leak coolant out and cause engine damage. Another good thing is the 24/7 Lincoln concierge phone line. they are limited in what they can do. but helpful in a pinch. They're akin to AppleCare. Appearance/style- well, the car does definitely look expensive when compared to other cars in its class. For me personally, I work in an area where there are a lot of blue collar type people. When some of them see that car, I always have to fend off some remark like, "Wow, where did you get the money to buy a car like that?" or "it must be nice to be rich". I find answering to those remarks to be tedious. A friend of mine who drives a new lexus suv, doesn't have to deal with people saying those sorts of things to him. So it depends on the person. Some people like that the car is blatant "conspicuous" consumption and noticeable. I do not & don't like draw attention to myself, which is difficult with this car.

Love The Aviator

I work as an Executive Chauffeur. After logging several thousand miles in this vehicle I would say with absolute confidence that I would eagerly and willingly buy a Lincoln Aviator. I recommend test driving one. The Aviator drives so smooth and it is so quiet inside. It has plenty of power. The interior technology is not too complicated. The AC and heat are powerful when needed. Lincoln interiors are beautiful and in my opinion better than Cadillac. To me the interior of the Lincoln seems like a fine and tasteful watch.
