Lexus has been building three-row SUVs for years, but until the TX arrived for the 2024 model year, none of them were exactly family-friendly. The TX fills that role better than the GX and LX off-roaders ever did, with spacious seating for up to seven, a cavernous cargo hold, and fuel economy in the high 20s. And its crossover-SUV platform means the TX rides far more comfortably than the comparatively burly GX and TX.

Edmunds spotlight: Which powertrain is right for you?

The TX is available with three different powertrains: a turbocharged four-cylinder, a hybridized turbo-four and a plug-in hybrid V6. Not surprisingly, the hybrids get better fuel economy than the gas-only TX 350 — 27 mpg combined for the TX 500h hybrid and 29 mpg for the plug-in hybrid TX 550h+, as well as 33 miles of electric range, versus the TX 350's 23 mpg combined. But performance may be more of a deciding factor than efficiency. The hybrids come with standard all-wheel drive, and Lexus says the all-wheel-drive TX 350 needs 7.8 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph, compared to 6.1 seconds for the 500h and 5.9 seconds for the 550h+.

Competitors to consider

The TX's competitive set depends on whether shoppers are considering the gas, hybrid or plug-in hybrid option. The Acura MDX, Audi Q7 and Mercedes-Benz GLE offer three rows of seating, but none are as roomy as the TX. The GLE is also available as a plug-in hybrid but in performance-oriented AMG form. Shoppers leaning toward a plug-in hybrid should be sure to check out the Volvo XC90. The Mazda CX-90 and the TX's Toyota Grand Highlander twin don't wear premium badges but readily impress.

Driving experience

How does the Lexus TX drive? We tested the TX 550h+, which is the plug-in hybrid version, as well as the TX 350. In our testing, the big 550h+ accelerated from 0 to 60 mph mph in 5.6 seconds, which is quick though ultimately pretty average for a luxury SUV. By comparison, the less powerful TX 350 clocked a far slower time of 8.1 seconds. As you'd expect, the TX feels its size and has a suspension that favors comfort over sport. This makes for a body-roll-filled experience anytime you take a turn with some vigor. The good news is that the TX is an absolute peach during daily driving, offering smooth responses with its near-seamless hybrid powertrain.

If you opt for the TX 550h+, you'll really appreciate the adaptive suspension. We found its ride quality to be noticeably better than what we experienced in the TX 350. Lexus' Safety System+ 3.0 is well stocked with advanced driver aids, and while they work fairly well, we did find them a bit slow to react and a bit conservative in their allowances. If you have the extra money, we'd recommend the surround-view camera system — it makes parking the big TX a lot less stressful.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Lexus TX? Overall, the TX is a very comfortable SUV for long-distance drives. Our test vehicle had seat heating and ventilation functions for both the front seats and outboard second-row seats. The climate control system works quickly and effectively, even offering three levels for the maximum fan speed in the auto setting. Noise and vibration levels are about what you'd expect of a luxury SUV — things are mostly quiet, especially when the TX 550h+ is driving in electric mode.

In-cabin tech

8.4/10

How’s the tech? The 14-inch touchscreen is crisp-looking and has easy-to-read graphics and quick responses. But the on-screen menu layout could use some refinement. Our TX test vehicle also had the upgraded Mark Levinson audio system. Usually, we love these systems in Lexus vehicles, but this one's overall audio quality was a bit of a disappointment.

Wireless smartphone connectivity is standard but, strangely enough, navigation is not. After the free trial expires, Lexus charges a fee to continue the cloud-based service. We had a few issues with connecting to the cloud-based system, even in populated Southern California. The TX does have a decent voice command system, but it's too slow to respond for what it can do.

How’s storage and cargo? Even with all three rows of seats in place, the TX has 20.2 cubic feet of space for groceries or small suitcases — especially with the back seats pushed upright instead of reclined. Space improves to a generous 57.4 cubes when you fold down the third row, which can be done with a quick push of a button. There are cubbies in the third row that can hold an iPad, and each passenger gets multiple cupholder options.

Installing a car seat in the TX should be an easy process with easy-to-find LATCH points on the two outboard seats. The SUV's not-too-tall ride height and wide-opening rear doors also help to make loading in a seat less of a headache.

Is the Lexus TX a good value? The entry-level TX 350 is priced competitively but is a little underpowered; the much more powerful plug-in hybrid TX 550h is also much more expensive, with a sticker price that nears $80K. That's pricier than plug-in versions of the Mercedes-Benz GLE and BMW X5, though the TX has more space than either one. We were unimpressed by the materials quality throughout the TX's interior. It's filled with generic-looking dark plastics and soft-touch materials, without any emphasis on design or detail. Put another way, it's far too similar to the less expensive Toyota Grand Highlander that it shares a platform with. Warranty coverage is fairly standard for the class.

How’s the fuel economy? In our testing, the TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid (which is what we tested) provided 31 miles of all-electric range, or 2 miles short of its EPA estimate. After the battery went flat, the TX averaged 29 mpg. For reference, the EPA says you can expect 27 mpg combined from the TX 500h regular hybrid or 23 mpg combined from the TX 350.

There's nothing about the TX that stands out above its competitors apart from the excellent passenger space that it offers. If you're looking for a family-friendly luxury SUV, this one nails it. Unfortunately, Lexus didn't upgrade the TX enough from its Grand Highlander roots. It's lacking the exciting design and personality we expect from a Lexus SUV.

Which TX trim does Edmunds recommend?

You can pay a lot for a hybrid or plug-in TX and still not have all the features that make a luxury vehicle worth it. That's why we like the TX 350 Luxury. Loaded with every available option, including heated and ventilated second-row captain's chairs and a premium Mark Levinson audio system, it still rings up cheaper than the most affordable hybrid model. Few owners are likely to keep their TX long enough to make up the price difference with savings on gas.

Defect Description:: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2026 Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru Solterra vehicles equipped with a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) system. Please see the recall report for a complete list of models. A software error may cause the rearview camera to freeze or display a blank screen when the vehicle is in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Defect Consequence:: A rearview camera that fails to display an image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective Action:: Dealers will update the parking assist software, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed December 16, 2025. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 25TB13 and 25LB06. Subaru's number for this recall is WRE25.
