As Lexus' flagship SUV, the LX is an extremely polished rock-hopper. It cruises in utter serenity that belies its immense size and pampers occupants with plush seats and sumptuous leather accented by exotic hardwood or artful aluminum trim. The twin-turbocharged V6 engine is a paragon of refinement, and the available hybrid assistance adds extra wallop and mpg. The Lexus' German competitors are more engaging to drive, and its cabin is less roomy than those of many rivals, but the LX excels at tranquility.

If you're looking for engagement rather than isolation in your three-row luxury SUV, the Mercedes-Benz GLS and BMW X7 will be more satisfying than the LX. With the base engines, both are quicker and more efficient than the Lexus, and their optional powerplants will leave the LX in the dust. The Infiniti QX80 offers a more exuberant take on Japanese luxury at a significant discount compared to the Lexus. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer will keep up with the Lexus on any trail it ventures down, but it lacks the LX's refinement.

Based on the larger Toyota Land Cruiser sold in other markets, the Lexus LX is a seriously robust SUV with an 8,000-pound towing capacity and genuine off-road credibility. A height-adjustable air suspension and locking center differential that ensures the front and rear wheels are turning at the same speed are standard across the line. Opt for the Overtrail trim level and you get locking front and rear differentials for maximum traction over soft and/or gooey ground, as well as robust 33-inch all-terrain tires.
