Used 1999 Land Rover Range Rover SUV Consumer Reviews
1999 4.0 SE Still Excellent
I bought this as an upgrade to my former Discovery. It has been a wonderful vehicle in class, luxury, agility, and it does every thing perfectly except accelerating quickly on the interstate or hills and mountains here in Colorado. I'd definitely opt for the 4.6 rather than the 4.0. HUGE difference.
Great Car, but Expensive to Maintain
First of all I've always loved this vehicle. Since seeing it at an auto show I wanted to get one. I've had it for almost five years now. I love the unique look. I love comfort. The biggest issue is the cost whenever you have to do any maintenance. If you get out of the shop without spending at least 2K then you're lucky. That will be the reason I don't get another.

Problem after problem
First of all this CERTIFIED used vehicle came with bald tires. At $260 apiece, that's a significant expense. Shortly the head gasket blew and one header was cracked. Next the passenger door wanted to stay locked, then one brake light and headlight blew. At an oil change, the accessory belt and radiator hoses were found to be worn and were replaced at my cost. Then a heater core leak. Next, there is a short circuit and the front windows do not roll up. Now the vehicle won't start, probably the starter.
Nerer Again
We have especially enjoyed the off road capabilities of this large suv. After purchase we attended a Rover sponsored event to learn off-roading. We were beginners and joined about 8 other Rovers, mostly Discoveries but two Defenders. I laughed as we roamed in air conditioned comfort and out- performed any thing in our group. I believe when these Rovers are right, they are at the top for luxury and taking you anywhere a 4-wheeler will go.
Unique set of wheels
When looking for a cross between a S class Mercedes and a Ford F150 there are not too many vehicles that fit this niche. Our 1999 had 27K miles, seemed hardly to have been used, it is still immaculate. We had been searching for over 9 months, lots of research and looking. The comfort, ride and versatility that the Range Rover supplies clearly out weighs the short comings of the lack of performance on the in town driving and the above average fuel consumption that are the only short comings that I have noticed. Off road it is fantastic, that is where the Rover truly shines. What else would the Queen of England chose for her Chariot anyway.... :-)
