Form or function? We imagine most SUV buyers would choose function, but form is important, too — and the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is all about form. Available as a four-door hatchback, a slick two-door "coupe" and, as of 2017, a two-door convertible, the Evoque makes a sleek styling statement. And while it may be a little short on utility — cargo space is notably lacking — we think the Evoque makes a marvelous traveling companion.
The Evoque features a 240-horsepower turbocharged engine, and its suspension is tuned for quick and enthusiastic driving. It's fun for the commute as well as a fast run on a curvy road. This being a British vehicle (and a Land Rover to boot), it is awash in luxury, with leather upholstery and an 11-speaker stereo as standard. Tin-top models get a panoramic sunroof, and the convertible's fabric top can be raised or lowered while the Evoque is moving at up to 30 mph.
To be honest, we'd like a little more power from the Evoque's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which is EPA-rated at 24 mpg combined (21 city/29 highway) for fixed-roof models and 23 mpg combined (20 city/28 highway) for convertibles. We timed the Evoque's zero-to-60-mph run at 7.2 seconds, which is slow for this class. But we love that the smallest Range Rover is true to the brand in terms of its off-road ability, with standard all-wheel drive, a driver-selectable Terrain Response System, and All-Terrain Progress Control, essentially off-road cruise control that works at crawling speed. Should the City of Beverly Hills decide to replace Rodeo Drive's pavement with a muddy bog, Evoque owners will still be able to shop at House of Bijan.
Like Bijan, the Evoque elicits a price for its style: The cabin is cramped and the steeply raked roofline reduces both backseat headroom and rearward visibility. Such are the sacrifices one must make to be a trendsetter. But front-seat comfort is just fine, and we love the look and feel of the cabin, which delivers exactly what we expect from this pricey British automaker.
Naturally, there are a dizzying array of model choices with five trim levels: SE, SE Premium, HSE, HSE Dynamic, and top-of-the-line Autobiography. Of those, the coupe is only offered in SE Premium trim and the convertible in HSE Dynamic as well as an exclusive SE Dynamic model. All are exceptionally well equipped. Which is best?
