Terrible Experience

This is our first (and definitely last) Land Rover. We purchased this for our large family of 6 after previously driving the Mercedes GL350 and Infiniti QX60. The Discovery doesn't compare with either vehicle - especially in terms of reliability. In the first two months of ownership, the car was at the dealership's service department for 40 days with a laundry list of problems: car was jerking during acceleration, infotainment screen freezes, air conditioning comes out hot, constant error messages on dash, DEF depleted quickly, etc. Land Rover America has been difficult to deal with - customer service is not worthy of the luxury price of this car. Never buying a Land Rover again.

Solid SUV option at the high end of the spectrum

Honestly, the Disco gets a bad rap sometimes because it is a Land Rover. The brand has had its issues over the decades, but this 5th generation seems to have it all figured out. Great family vehicle, impossibly amazing off road qualities that most people can’t even fathom how to use fully, and a high end interior that makes it feel luxurious. The sub luxury brands are all catching up (Toyota highlander, Hyundai Pallisade, Kia Telluride) but they are all trying to become what the Discovery IS. While the price can have some sticker shock and service costs can be high, that’s expected for a car in this segment (compare to BMW, Audi, Mercedes and it is quite reasonable) All in, it’s a reliable vehicle, does all the family stuff you need and is heads above the vehicles desperately trying to say “me too”! The HSE Luxury is my personal favorite, as everything other trim level just seems to be missing out on all the cool stuff you can actually pack in to this vehicle. Negative comments about the infotainment system are vastly over rated. I drove the Jaguar F-Type that comes equipped with the exact same system and found it easy to use and quite pretty from an aesthetic point of view. For those that don’t like the onboard system, it has Apple car play and android auto, although that somehow cheapens the experience in my eyes. I own the HSE Luxury TD6, and while the engine is a little more sluggish than the F Type cousin, it has kore than enough passing power and acceleration for a 7 seater SUV that does it all. Knowing that you “have to” drive it hard once in a while to burn out the engine is a nice perk - eliminating the guilt associated with having fun with a beautifully designed vehicle. You can fit full size adults comfortable in all 3 rows, and while the LR4 and pre ious owners miss the split tail gate the back “bench” thingy is just another cool thing for LR to throw in just in the name of staying true To it’s brand. It drives well for it’s size, but not like a sports car. If you want sport performance, go somewhere else. Asking this vehicle to handle tightly in corners is preposterous, as it does so much else! It is a smooth, comfortable ride, with a feeling that the vehicle wants to go off-road at the next opportunity! This is a vehicle that knows what it is, and gets a 5 star rating is doing exactly what it’s designed to. Love it. UPDATE: We’ve owned our Disco for 3 years now, and it’s the best vehicle we’ve ever owned. Looking at comparabale pricing and mid size SUV’s , we were open to everything out there including the Highlander, Palisade, And Telluride. At a decent trim level they were all 60k to 70k plus, and we found a 2 yr old disco for 50k. Something felt suspicious, and I was skeptical, but the more I researched the more I liked it. It’s off road performance is outstanding (just watch the videos on this thing) but the around town carrying kids to soccer practices type driving is superb. It’s not the fastest vehicle out there - and if you want a sport car in an SUV this isn’t the vehicle for you. It IS however, a sub luxury SUV that looks aggressive just sitting there in the parking lot, is unique enough to be recognizable, and has so many creature comforts to keep everyone in the vehicle happy (all 7 seats have bum warmers - an absolute perk in colder climates!). We can fit full size adults in all 7 seats (I’m 6’4 and fit in every seat) and while climbing into the back row does require a bit of agility, the space inside is remarkable for a mid size SUV.

Landrover Discovery 5 Meltdown

I purchased a 2017 Discovery Diesel in November 2017. I've had it at the dealership for multiple reasons since owning it. I also had the leaking windshield and it took months for them to get another windshield. After that was replaced I sill had condensation forming in the vehicle. The dealership took it back, removed the carpeting and "let it dry out". Now I have what appears to be a place that has melted on the rear spoiler just to the left of the LED light in the spoiler. The dealership said I or someone / something must have done it. I've shown it to a dozen folks and no one can figure it out. I don't know exactly when it happened as I don't always notice that spoiler. All I know is it happened between Jan 18th - march 03 2019. I wish I could figure out how it happen / what happened. Spoiler is said to be $1500 and then it has to be painted.

The car looks and drives like a dream. The great majority of my cars were German, this particular car drives better than what I had but the reliability is questionable. The car had being in the shop now 3 times with only 16K miles. Biggest issue had being with the Turbo Management system, it had gone to Restrictive Drive 4 times and check engine light is now in the dashboard. Disappointing experience after I had spend $60K in an SUV. My expectation for the brand was much higher than what they are delivering. I'm hopping that I can get the issues resolved as I love the how the car drives.

I felt like I needed to add this after seeing the two negative reviews for people with poor experiences. I have owned this car for five years, and absolutely love it. The only issue I ever had was when the battery died and I could not figure out why I had continuous problems. I realized it was because I left the center console cooler (refrigerator) on. Other than that, I have literally had zero issues. I love the app to start my car and warm it up from a distance on a cold day, or cool it down before I load the kids in after being out all day. Great mileage, dependable, comfortable, great turning radius, looks great, and fantastic mileage 23 mpg daily and averages 26 mpg on road trips. LOVE
