The 2017 Lamborghini Aventador is expensive, loud, superlative and exclusive. But it's also a functional art piece, style statement, engineering exercise, and an homage to the emotions that automobiles can bring out in people.
A non-turbocharged 6.5-liter V12 engine sits right behind the driver, in the middle of the car, and the engine and suspension all hang off its carbon-fiber chassis. Power is sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed, single-clutch automatic transmission and then through an all-wheel-drive system.
It's low, wide and long. Sight lines to the rear are impossible, and frankly they're fairly bad to the passenger side as well. Deep sills make getting into and out of the car difficult, even with the swing-up doors. There's a trunk in the front that's big enough for two duffel bags, but don't put anything that can melt or needs to stay cool because the compartment gets warm from radiator heat.
Having said that, all of these issues dissolve the moment you pull onto a long stretch of twisty mountain road. The stiff suspension that rattled your teeth in the city keeps the chassis in perfect position over the ground to maximize tire grip. The seating position that was uncomfortable on the highway just a few moments ago is now perfect for holding you in place during high-g cornering and acceleration. The heavy steering and stiff brake pedal are now communicative and let you know precisely what the front wheels are feeling.
The Aventador SV, or Superveloce, tops the range. Thanks to a diet of carbon fiber throughout the bodywork, and the removal of both sound deadening and entertainment system, the SV drops approximately 100 pounds compared to a standard Aventador. Engine hardware changes allow the 6.5-liter V12 engine to produce 750 hp sent to all four wheels as other Aventadors. The suspension features magnetorheological dampers that can be adjusted by the driver, or as conditions dictate, and the aerodynamics package is upped to 11 for increased downforce.
The standard Aventador and the Aventador SV are also available as roadsters, with removable tops.
