As tweeners go, the Sorento Hybrid is a good one. Its positioning between smaller two-row and larger three-row SUVs is a boon for buyers who don't want to contend with the size and cost of a bigger SUV. Just keep in mind that even with three rows, the Sorento still only seats six. Its footprint is especially apt if the target audience for its third row are smaller people or those who only have to ride there for short trips. It gives up about 4 inches of wheelbase to its big sibling, the Telluride, which offers a very usable third row. It probably makes the most sense for an efficiency-minded buyer who's looking to save some money over a bigger SUV but still needs the utility of a third row.

How does the Kia Sorento Hybrid drive? We tested the Sorento Hybrid in top SX Prestige trim. On Edmunds' test track, it accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 7.6 seconds — respectable for its class and quicker than its mechanical sibling, the Hyundai Santa Fe. The automatic transmission shifts quickly and smoothly, which isn't a given with hybrids.

Acceleration feels strong off the line, and the transition between gas and electric power is unobtrusive. Braking is confidence-inspiring thanks to a balanced, intuitive brake pedal. From 60 mph, the Kia came to a stop in just 127 feet, with minimal nosedive. Handling and steering provide a sense of control and assurance on the road.

The Sorento Hybrid has a generally smooth ride. On the highway, it stays controlled over bumps, imparting confidence and a sense of stability.

Visibility is quite good thanks to large windows. The optional surround-view camera system, included with the SX Prestige trim, offers high-definition images and proves helpful in tight situations.

The Sorento Hybrid's advanced driver aids are impressive in scope as well as application. We encountered no false alarms and had no complaints except for an overly cautious rear cross-traffic warning system.

Comfort

How comfortable is the Kia Sorento Hybrid? All three rows of seats provide better-than-expected comfort for a small SUV. The front seats in our top-of-the-line test vehicle offered heating, ventilation, and a good range of adjustment. The second-row captain's chairs were firm but more comfortable and supportive than some bench seats in other SUVs. The third-row seats are small and lower to the floor but offer enough support for adults. The dual-zone climate control works well to heat or cool the cabin to your liking.

We found the cabin to be well insulated from outside noise, an atmosphere complemented by the quiet hybrid engine.

Contrary to its small SUV classification, the Sorento Hybrid offers agreeable space for adults in all three rows. You'll even find more legroom in the second row than in dedicated two-row SUVs such as the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. Getting into the first two rows is an easy affair. Even though the third row is hospitable for adults, it's a bit of a squeeze to get back there. Unlike the newer Hyundai Santa Fe, there is no option for a second-row bench seat.

Many of Kia's user-friendly attributes are present in this SUV, and buyers new to the brand will have no problem getting a handle on the interior.

In-cabin tech

How’s the tech? Our top-of-the-line test vehicle came decked out with a 12.3-inch touchscreen with navigation, an upgraded Bose audio system and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. The graphics are crisp and creative and the menus easy to navigate. The Bose audio system was slightly less impressive, and we never really found a sweet spot over a wide range of music. The merely average voice command system is the least impressive tech in the Sorento Hybrid. It lacks natural language recognition and flexibility.

With multiple USB ports and a wireless charger, passengers won't lack power for their devices. Wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration is standard.

Storage & cargo

How’s storage and cargo? With the third-row seats up, there's only 12.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity, which equates to a row of about five grocery bags. Still, it's decent for a smaller three-row SUV, and there's no space penalty for choosing the hybrid. With the third row dropped, the Sorento Hybrid offers between 38.5 cubic feet and 45 cubic feet, depending on how far forward you slide the second-row seats. That's a bit more than what smaller two-row SUVs, such as the CR-V and RAV4, offer.

Interior storage is another strong point. There are plenty of helpful storage spaces throughout the cabin for stashing small items or beverages. The Sorento Hybrid's towing capacity is 1,654 pounds, quite a bit less than the regular Sorento can handle.

Is the Kia Sorento Hybrid a good value? As we've come to expect from Kia, the Sorento Hybrid is well equipped and well built. There are bits of hard plastic scattered about the cabin, but they are offset by thoughtful features, detailing and premium touches throughout. Higher trims can be expensive, but the Sorento Hybrid still manages to look and feel like a good value for the money.

Kia warranties are excellent, and the Sorento Hybrid comes with five-year/60,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranties. Roadside assistance is more typical at five years/60,000 miles.

How’s the fuel economy? The EPA estimates the all-wheel-drive Sorento with the hybrid engine gets 34 mpg combined. We regularly saw an mpg average closer to the high 20s in our real-world driving, so this could be your experience as well. While that kind of fuel economy isn't bad, other hybrids do better. For example, the larger Toyota Highlander and even larger Grand Highlander Hybrids are more efficient. On the upside, the turbocharged hybrid engine doesn't need premium gasoline.

Just like the regular Sorento, the Sorento Hybrid is pleasant to drive and has no major flaws. While we don't mind the styling, it doesn't look nearly as distinctive as the related Hyundai Santa Fe. Overall we think this is a very practical hybrid, just not a very exciting one.

The squared-off leading edge of its hood is cribbed from the Telluride as well. Inside, there's the option to have two 12.3-inch displays that together make up a panoramic panel for the infotainment system and instrument cluster. One other change that matters if you're buying the hybrid to maximize fuel savings: The EPA chopped 1 mpg off of the front-wheel-drive Sorento Hybrid's rating this year. It's still at a respectable 36 mpg.

The Kia Sorento hybrid is full of so many features that we continue to be amazed. What amazed us most was the incredible mileage for the first 500 miles in Eco mode----an astounding 39.3 mpg, which was much more than we expected.

2023 Kia Sorento Hybrid EX 4dr SUV AWD (1.6L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric hybrid 6A)

Transitioned to this from a 16' Nissan Rogue. When vehicle shopping I wanted: -AWD -Hybrid -able to tow 2k -third row -drive safety tech (lane keep assist, adaptive cruise, emergency braking) That wish list eliminated almost all three row SUVs on the market as many three row SUVs are not hybrid models or are markedly more expensive than a Sorento EX hybrid. I drive 600 miles a week … mostly interstate. Complaints, Kia, large Kia dealer -had obnoxious passenger wind noise at highway speeds... Dealer I bought it from was useless, small local dealer changed entire passenger door seal -steering wheel squeaking/squealing, dealer changed gasket and then replaced entire steering column-issue resolved -different passenger side wind noise noted when AC external air flow option on ... Incredibly annoying. Was in shop 5-6 times for this, claim started with Kia and Kia engineers also could not figure it out. Filed lemon law claim and was denied as the car was still "drivable" All of this happened the first 20,000 miles of owning. Had this car in the shop more than my last three vehicles combined. All was covered under warranty but incredible inconvenient to be without the car for probably 20 days total in first few months of owning. Passenger AC noise occurs ~5% of the time at highway speed and stops if using air recirc option. THE GOOD: This thing is like a Swiss army knife -34 mpg average on interstate (currently 31k miles), better than that in town -towing is impressive. I have towed a snowmobile, separately a 1,000 pound Polaris ranger on a two place aluminum trailer without issues -third row is great for hauling more folks around for short trips -drive assist tech GREATLY reduces drive fatigue especially if you drive a lot . Has also prevented an accident or two -tech overall and standard options are superior to really any other vehicle at this price point CONS: -The steering column, the AC noise, Kia corporate being terrible to work with -third row not comfy for long trips -third row and back of car don't have air vents that you would get in a telluride, traverse, palisade If I could go back I would have test driven mine on the interstate for 15 minutes and realized I needed to pick another Sorento hybrid that wasn't this one. Recently ive been 10,000 miles with zero issues, no shop visits aside from oil change. Great gas mileage, AWD is great, towing capacity, driving tech and seating for 8. I was between this and a Telluride S, which were of similar cost. The telluride S does not have the level of interior luxury as the Sorento EX and the mpg is notably worse. Hopefully Kia can work some of the kinks out, but for most folks who won't regularly haul more than 4 people or tow heavy loads (over 1,500 pounds) this is probably a better option for most than a telluride, palisade. Separately, I think every single family member/friend who has ridden in the Sorento has commented on how nice it looks, comfy, quiet.
