2026 Kia Carnival Hybrid

Step back from the 2026 Kia Carnival Hybrid, blur your vision a bit, and you may see something more like a full-size SUV. The tall grille, flat roof and square back recall the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition and similarly muscular family sleds. This is certainly no accident. Kia calls the Carnival a "multi-purpose vehicle" (something Mazda once tried with some success), but there's no hiding the lower ride height and sliding side doors, typical trademarks of minivan utility. We're not complaining, though. Kia has traded the soft, efficient edges of most minivans for sharp upright angles and we fully endorse it. And with the Carnival Hybrid's impressive fuel economy, it offers both visual and economic appeal.

Automakers have been slow to embrace hybrid minivans. Despite the ideal conditions of a family car tasked with low-to-moderate suburban speeds, where hybrids excel, there are reasons they haven't taken off. Vans are too heavy, hybrid configurations too fragile. Hybrid vans? Too niche. The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid first bucked the trend with gutsy V6-plus-electric-motor acceleration, then the Toyota Sienna went hybrid-only. Today, the Kia Carnival Hybrid joins this select group of gas-electric vans. Its EPA rating of 33 mpg combined is an extraordinary increase of nearly 60% compared to the standard V6-powered Carnival rated at 21 mpg. In our testing, we even saw returns of more than 40 mpg combined. With a small sacrifice in utility — a 2,500-pound towing limit, for example — and a modest $2,000 price increase over the non-hybrid, this is a hybrid worthy of embrace.

The Toyota Sienna heads our list of top-rated minivans, but it's a close finish with the Honda Odyssey and Carnival Hybrid narrowly behind. The Sienna gets slightly better fuel economy than the Kia and costs a little less to start, although the Carnival Hybrid's generous base features make it a hard bargain to beat. The Pacifica Hybrid falls a bit in our rankings — it recently topped the list — but with 30 mpg combined, it remains a smart choice. If you don't mind sacrificing fuel savings for something a bit more entertaining to drive, the Honda Odyssey sets a high bar for minivan handling.
