Rationality and practicality are, in our opinion, highly overrated. Sometimes you just have to indulge, and when it comes to cars, the Jaguar F-Type is one of our favorite indulgences. More than just a mode of transportation, the F-Type sits in the driveway like a beautiful sculpture. Slip it on ? the two-seat F-Type fits its occupants like a glove ? and the F-Type is a driver's dream, one that can match the abilities of some of the world's best sports cars. Jaguar offers the F-Type in both coupe and convertible body styles.
For 2017, Jaguar has a new base model in both coupe and convertible body styles. It does without a few comfort and convenience features but gives up none of the beauty or passion that endears the F-Type to us. On the high end is the new F-Type SVR, a high-performance edition with more power, a lightweight titanium exhaust system, an active rear spoiler and an upgraded interior.
The F-Type's entry-level engine is a 340-horsepower supercharged 3.0-liter V6; the S model bumps its output by another 40 hp. The F-Type can also be had with a supercharged V8 displacing 5.0 liters. Output is 550 hp in the R model and 575 in the SVR. Jag offers both rear- and all-wheel-drive versions of the V6 car, and rear-drivers can be had with a six-speed manual transmission. V8-powered cars get all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission as standard equipment. EPA fuel economy estimates range from 18 mpg combined for V8-powered cars up to 23 mpg combined for the manual rear-drive V6.
Inside, the F-Type exhibits beautiful materials and outstanding craftsmanship. The cabin is snug, as a British sports car should be. There's adequate headroom for taller drivers ? just barely ? but legroom is an issue. So is trunk space, which is limited in the coupe and downright stingy in the convertible.
The F-Type has a firm ride and a loud engine, but neither are the drawbacks they might seem to be: The F-Type's handling is electrifying and the soundtrack is epic. The V8 howls under acceleration and the exhaust crackles and pops on the overrun. And while the V6 isn't quite so dramatic, it has its own beautiful voice.
Model choices include Base, Premium, S, R and SVR. As we said earlier, the new base model strips out a few features but delivers the F-Type's outstanding driving experience at a more reasonable price. More equipment can be found in the Premium model, but as car fans we prefer the S, which delivers more performance-oriented hardware. The R adds in the V8 engine and an even sportier chassis, and the new SVR is the ultimate in F-Type performance.
