The 2017 Infiniti QX80 is a full-size luxury SUV that can tow a trailer, haul cargo or transport a crew of eight to a fine-dining restaurant, all while maintaining both a sense of style and serious utility-vehicle attitude. Body-on-frame construction, V8 power and available four-wheel drive give it street and off-road cred, and a fully appointed, plush interior keeps it civilized. This kind of SUV has succumbed in the sales race to more popular midsize crossover models, but for shoppers who need something larger and more capable, the QX80 is definitely worth a test drive.
Fully redesigned in 2011 (as the QX56), changes for 2017 are few. Trailer sway control is now standard on all models, the available forward collision warning system now has a pedestrian detection feature, and there are some new exterior and interior color choices.
The only available powerplant is a 5.6-liter V8 engine that generates 400 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque and comes mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive, with low-range gearing, is optional on the base model and standard on the Limited.
Fuel economy for the rear-wheel-drive QX80 is rated by the EPA at 16 mpg combined (14 city/20 highway). Choosing one of the four-wheel-drive variants drops the rating just a bit to 15 mpg combined (13 city/19 highway).
The QX80's size can make it a handful in a crowded parking lot, and it's not too happy being driven hard into corners either, although the available Infiniti Hydraulic Body Motion Control system can help reduce the tendency to roll. Out on the open road is where Infiniti's flagship really shines. There, drivers will appreciate the comfortable, controlled ride, smooth V8 engine and luxurious surroundings.
The base model has plenty of comfort and convenience features such as leather upholstery, three-zone automatic climate control and a premium infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity. Standard seating for seven can be increased to eight with the addition of a rear bench seat at no cost. Even the third row has an adjustable backrest, and when folded, the resulting cargo space outclasses anything in its segment.
Several packages are available that can add even more technology, driver assistance features and entertainment choices. Moving up to the Limited will probably be gilding the lily for most buyers, but those who select it will get all the trimmings, including an even more upscale interior.
