2018 Highlights

The 2018 Hyundai Sonata had been restyled inside and out and receives updates to its suspension and steering aimed at improving ride quality, response and feel. All models now come standard with blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assist; upgraded headlights are now LED instead of HID/xenon; and the optional panoramic sunroof has been shrunk to normal size in the interest of weight savings and increased fuel economy. On 2.0T models, a new eight-speed automatic transmission replaces the previous six-speed.

Consumer Rating

Very good, Excellent value
I got this car to replace my 2015 Sonata. Not sure the new style is better, I kind of liked the 2015 better, especially the rear with the plates on the trunk. But overall this is a terrific car for your money, save for a few drawbacks. The car drives well, nice quite ride and respectable handling, but ride is not as smooth as a Camry and handling not as good as an Accord, Mazda6, or as precise as a Fusion. Pros include: Slightly better ride/steering over my 2015. Better interior, smart controls (w/ non-auto climate), tuning knob, custom button. Overall is exemplary, very intuitive designed with nice big clearly labeled buttons and knobs. Touch screen is responsive, although some corners don't respond like it's supposed to. The interface is also quite easy to use. LCD Shows date (wish it would also show exterior temperature). Car doors make a satisfying thud when they close. Still a fully printed owner's manual! Cons include: Brakes still too touchy, it makes too abrupt stops. Steering is still too feather-light. Heated mirrors are no longer included in the base model - something Hyundai used to offer all these years. No CD player. I know many cars today omit them, but I really miss it. Home screen should be more customization. Would like to get rid of the AV Off message. Some settings are confusing. Ugly gauges (miss the 2015 Elantra). Only 1 USB for music & Android Auto. Bluetooth makes problems (I have a basic phone). No gap-less music player. Headlight delay is 5 min or none! Overall interior is not too pretty (2018 Accent is nicer). Can't turn off the LCD between the gauges.
Tall Guy in a Hyundai
I’m 6’ 3”, lots of headroom in this car. Easy to exit as the driver’s seat moves rearward when the engine in turned off and the shift lever is in Park. Driver’s seat also has adjustable lumbar support. Has adaptive headlights – front lights turn when steering wheel is turned. Trunk is large, plus the back seats fold down for additional room. The Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) uses radar signals and camera recognition. AEB has many limitations, be sure to read the Owner’s Manual for more info on this. Quite cabin on city streets. As Edmunds noted, some tire noise at freeway speeds. With the turbocharger, lots of power for entering the freeway and for passing. No heads up display, but speed is displayed in a large font in instrument cluster. Looks beautiful in quartz white pearl.
Not a bad car.
Do't believe the EPA figures on this car. I've had 2 straight Sonatas, 2.4 engine. I get 16 city, 31 highway, always on ECO. THe car is comfortable, reliable and attractive. It is quiet. It gives you a lot of amenities but those darn mileage figures won't increase.

The 2018 Hyundai Sonata is a popular choice in the midsize sedan segment because of its low cost of entry, wide range of available features, and spacious cabin and trunk. Like other Hyundai models, most of the available features are allocated within trim levels, with a few packages reserved for the upper trims. There are few, if any, stand-alone options.

The Sonata is available in seven trims: SE, Eco, SEL, Sport, Limited, Sport 2.0T and Limited 2.0T. For 2018, Hyundai decided to drop the 2017 base trim and make the SE the point of entry, which means you get more standard features than before, such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic headlights and a rearview camera. Hyundai also added blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assist as standard equipment across all models. Though the SE is decently equipped, stepping up to the Eco model is a no-brainer since you get a more responsive and fuel-efficient powertrain for a marginal price increase.

The next trim up is the SEL, a new addition to the Sonata line, and a trim that will be very attractive for some. The price jump over an SE is less than $2,000, but you get a lot for your money, including keyless entry and ignition, a power-adjustable driver seat, heated front seats, satellite and HD radio, and three years of Hyundai's Blue Link telematics. Additionally, you have the choice of upgrading your advanced driver aids to include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assist, something not offered on the lower two trims.

For those who crave more luxury or a sportier experience in their Sonata, the Sport and Limited trims offer just that to varying degrees. The Sport models receive unique exterior styling treatment and come equipped with sport seats and paddle shifters mounted on flat-bottom steering wheels. Limited trims are focused more on creature comforts such as ventilated leather seating, dual automatic climate control and rear window shades; they also have access to the full suite of advanced driver aids. Either trim can be equipped with the base engine or the top-of-the-line turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Bear in mind, though, that if you're going for the top-shelf Limited 2.0T model, you're now in compact luxury car territory.

Compared to the competition, Hyundai does an excellent job of providing value at every trim level, usually coming in at a lower price with equal or more features. And the trims available in the Sonata make it possible to pay for just the things you need or want. You can compare the Sonata to the other top players in the midsize segment easily, right here on Edmunds, and make that judgment call for yourself.
