While most Hyundais are practical cars for consumers who are focused on the bottom line, the Genesis Coupe is different. This coupe is proof that Hyundai has a less serious side. This Genesis is all about performance and style.
The four-cylinder Hyundai Genesis Coupe starts at $25,000, while V6 models start just under $30,000 and top out in the mid-$30Ks. These prices are competitive, but not necessarily cheaper than those of its competitors.
Although we could do without the fake hood vents, there's no denying this two-door Hyundai looks sporty. Inside, the quality of the materials is good for this price range, and the front seats are roomy and supportive. Hyundai recently added a telescoping steering wheel, which improves comfort for shorter drivers. Bluetooth and a USB input are standard, but the audio system's sound quality is nothing special.
Headroom is tight in the backseat, even for children. Trunk capacity is average for a coupe, and a folding rear seat provides extra utility. The coupe comes with a full array of airbags and back-up sensors are available on the Grand Touring model.
Two engines are available. The base, turbocharged four-cylinder offers plenty of power, and it's rated for 20 mpg in the city and 31 on the highway. But the V6 is the more exciting choice. It makes well over 300 horsepower, it sounds great, and it provides strong acceleration. An automatic transmission is available with either engine, but if you can deal with a manual, you'll enjoy shifting the six-speed in the V6-equipped R-Spec model featured in the video. Expect about 18 mpg in the city and 27 or 28 mpg on the highway with the V6.
This Hyundai feels balanced and athletic around turns, but the ride can be harsh and noisy with the 19-inch wheels and tires on the R-Spec model. Genesis Coupes with 18-inch wheels are better in this regard.
If there's flexibility in your budget, you might prefer the ride on the more upscale Infiniti G37, or you might want to consider the even more powerful Mustang GT. But if $30,000 is your hard limit, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe is tough to beat.
