OK, so what exactly is the difference between the 2017 Hyundai Elantra GT and the version without a GT in its name? Well, the simplest explanation is that one is a hatchback and the other is a sedan. As a result, the Elantra GT has considerably more cargo room, 51 cubic feet of maximum space in fact, which is just about tops for the segment.
However, dig deeper and there's actually far more different than just their trunk type. The GT wasn't completely redesigned for 2017 as its sedan sibling was; instead it dates back to 2013. It's also effectively the European version of the Elantra, meaning it's always had different styling as well as sportier driving dynamics. It also comes standard with a more powerful engine no longer shared with the Elantra sedan (though bettered by its new Sport trim level's turbo engine). So really, the GT should be on the radar for those looking for a compact hatchback with plenty of versatility and sportiness.
Fuel economy does take a hit with the bigger standard engine, though. Its 2.0-liter four-cylinder produces 173 horsepower and 154 pound-feet of torque and returns 27 mpg combined (24 city/32 highway) with the standard six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic. This is well off the pace of rivals, even those with similarly powerful engines.
Standard features are a bit sparse on the base model, though you still get air-conditioning, Bluetooth, satellite radio and a USB port. The Value Edition package adds desirable upgrades that include 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, keyless ignition and entry, leather upholstery, a power driver seat and heated front seats. The Tech package adds a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, a 7-inch touchscreen, a rearview camera, a navigation system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
You'll note that increasingly common accident avoidance tech is not available on the Elantra GT. These can be found on the Elantra sedan as well as several rivals. You'll also find the regular Elantra is also available with a wider variety of choice in terms of trim levels, features and engines not offered on the GT.
In the end, the 2017 Hyundai Elantra GT offers a lot of value for your money and an industry-leading warranty with unique styling that sets it apart from other hatchbacks in the segment. Let Edmunds help you find out more about the Elantra GT and where to get a great deal.
