Best car I ever owned - this is my second one!!
The Terrain not only stands out for it's looks, but it drives great, is dependable, comfortable, offers great features, and is decent on gas. I loved my first one so much that I got a new one. I did look at a few other vehicles, but none in the same class even compare. I have owned almost every make of car out there and the GMC Terrain has been the only one I ever considered owning a second time around!
Oil burner! Avoid!
2.4L Ecotec engine consumed 3 quarts of oil in the first 3600 miles! Oil minder read 87% life, yet when I checked the dipstick before a trip it read no oil. Added 1 quart still no reading, added 2nd quart, still no reading, added 3rd quart, dipstick read 1/2 to full line. Engine requires full synthetic "Dexos" spec 5w-30 motor oil. GM has known of the issue with oil consumption of this engine for many years, has issued a Technical Service Bulletin requesting dealers to document excessive oil consumption, then authorizes installation of new pistons and rings. 2011 documented as worst model year. Uninformed owners running the engine low on oil are not warned of the deficiency, the engines timing chains and guides fail, the lack of lubrication takes its toll on bearings and parts depending on sufficient oil to cool and lubricate them. Engines can fail or seize creating a significant safety hazard. Internet search this issue, many horror stories. If failure occurs out of warranty or you are the second owner you are on your own...Where is the outrage?

Buy a six cylinder. This is a bad ass looking vehicle but the four cylinder doesn't cut it. When merging onto the freeway and pressing the gas pedal firmly it makes all of the right sounds but doesn't actually do anything. I am disappointed in that. The test drive was in a semi-congested city setting where pep doesn't matter so it was wasn't noticed. It also has a fairly wide turning radius which surprised me. I traded a Honda Pilot in for this Terrain. The Pilot was much larger but had a smaller turning radius. As much as I like the looks of this car I rate drivability low. The interior is appointed fairly well and everything is easy to work but the lack of pep distracts from that. The seat are comfortable on long rides. It is a great vehicle for driving around town but isn't really a joy on the freeway.

The 2017 GMC Terrain proves that a supple ride, a quiet cabin, powerful available V6 engine and commodious backseat never go out of style. The Terrain, a small crossover SUV, has been on the market for eight years, during which time many competing vehicles have introduced more up-to-date features, especially in infotainment and active safety. But from the beginning, the Terrain's formula was a good one, and the appeal remains strong for buyers of crossover SUVs, as recent sales have continued to prove. This crossover is the right size and has a perpetually winning look. It can be trimmed with a selection of bright and glossy highlights and fitted with large flashy wheels.

With the four-cylinder engine, the front-wheel-drive Terrain returns an EPA-rated 25 mpg combined (21 city/31 highway), while the V6-powered all-wheel-drive model achieves 18 mpg combined (16 city/23 highway).

But as you might imagine, time hasn't been kind to the Terrain in some other respects. The base four-cylinder engine provides both underwhelming acceleration and disappointing real-world fuel economy, while the dashboard is showing its age thanks to a hard-to-reach touchscreen and some ergonomic faux pas. Furthermore, smartphone users — i.e., just about every car shopper these days — should note that Bluetooth audio connectivity isn't even available on the two lowest trim levels (SL and SLE-1). Besides the lack of some contemporary technology, the biggest drawback of the 2017 Terrain is the comparatively small rear cargo area.

The 2017 Terrain remains a versatile and generally competent crossover, but we'd recommend taking a close look at a number of its rivals before making a final decision. Segment leaders include the enduringly well-rounded Honda CR-V, the significantly refreshed Toyota RAV4, and the sporty yet practical Mazda CX-5. We also like the redesigned Kia Sportage, which has a big backseat like the Terrain's, along with contemporary cabin technology. Faced with distinguished competitors such as these, the 2017 GMC Terrain has its work cut out if it wants to win your heart.

The Terrain offers five trim levels to choose from. The front-drive SL is reasonably well equipped except for the lack of Bluetooth connectivity. The SLE-1 introduces all-wheel drive, while the SLE-2 piles on the comfort and convenience features. The SLT adds even greater refinement. Finally, at the top of the line, the Denali offers an exclusive suspension for added comfort.
