If you're shopping for a high-end luxury sedan, there's a new player in town: the Genesis G90. This is the flagship vehicle for Genesis, the new luxury brand from Hyundai. Yes, you read that right. Just as Toyota has Lexus and Nissan has Infiniti, Hyundai now has a luxury brand called Genesis. The Genesis G90 is a proper luxury yacht, with a posh interior, brilliant stereo and a choice of powerful engines. But the pricing reflects its South Korean roots: Whereas high-end European sedans in this size class often sell in the neighborhood of $100,000, the Genesis can be had for closer to $70,000.
We can't honestly say that the G90 should have the German luxury brands trembling in their lederhosen. There are still a few areas in which the G90 comes up short. The leather isn't as nice as it could be; the G90 uses plastic trim in places where the competition uses metal. The heavily lacquered wood trim looks fake even though it isn't. And if you're looking for true high-end gadgetry, such as perfumers, night-vision cameras and other technological frivolities, you won't find them in the Genesis G90. But as they say in the car-reviewing business, the car checks all the luxury-car boxes. The ride is glassy-smooth. The cabin is as quiet as a library. The engines deliver a strong, even flow of power. The G90 is nine-tenths of the way there for seven-tenths of the price.
Although the interior may miss a couple of the finer details, it's hard to complain about space or comfort in the cabin, especially if you opt for the power-adjustable rear seats. The 15.7-cubic-foot trunk is decently sized, and though the seatbacks don't fold down, there is a pass-through for skis. The infotainment system is well positioned and easy to use, and the stereo sounds great.
The Genesis G90 is offered with two engines: a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 that produces 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque and a 5.0-liter non-turbocharged V8 that's good for 420 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. Both engines employ an eight-speed automatic transmission, and both can be had with rear- or all-wheel drive. EPA-estimated fuel economy ranges from 20 mpg combined (17 city/24 highway) for the V6 (both rear- and all-wheel-drive versions) down to 18 mpg combined (15 city/23 highway) for the all-wheel-drive V8.
Out on the open road, quiet and comfort are the order of the day. Both engines accelerate with authority, but the steering could use some work, especially out on the highway, where the G90 has a tendency to wander and needs constant correction.
Genesis offers the G90 in 3.3T Premium and 5.0 Ultimate models. Both are lavishly equipped with comfort and safety features, and the engine is the primary difference between the two, though you'll need to buy the 5.0 Ultimate if you want those reclining rear seats.
