1997 Ford Taurus Wagon GL 4dr Wagon

Review

This is a great used wagon for the money if you can find one that has been used gently, i.e., was maintained on conservative intervals. There's easily enough room for 5 people, and the cargo space is truly enormous. The base Vulcan engine (145 hp) lacks power but is quiet and smooth. The upside of the car's tremendous weight is its stability and, while no one wants to go head to head with an SUV, this biggie wagon feels solid. I've been quite happy.

Best Features

Space! Low-to-the-ground, so drives like a car instead of a mushy SUV. Engine is quiet, interior noise is low. Gains tremendous speed going downhill (probably because it's shaped like a torpedo and is the same weight as one).

Worst Features

Sturdier brakes, sturdier transmission, make certain basic maintenance items (replacing blinker bulbs, cabin air filter, etc.) easier to access. Remove open door sensors from actual latch (they get gummed up--WD40 fixes it).

1997 Ford Taurus Wagon GL 4dr Wagon

Review

I bought this car new in 1997 and it has
been very reliable. I wish the gas
mileage was better as my overall average
is only 20. 27-28 on long highway trips.

Best Features

Seats are very comfortable. Radio and AC/heating controls are easy to use.

Worst Features

I would like to see the doors redesigned so as not to receive knicks from other car doors. Basically the door protectors are for looks. I would also like to see larger map holders on the sides of the door.

Review

Bought this wagon in 2001 with 85000
miles. I have since put on 46000
miles. Once had to have work done on
the transmission with two solenoid
valves replaced on the valve body. All
tranny shops wanted to rebuild the
whole thing for 1500/- and above. The
local ford dealer did a good diagnosis
and prescribed the right parts. I then
went to a trans shop and gave them the
diagnosis to fix for half the labor
estimate of the dealer. In all about
400/- to fix. 300/- in parts.

Best Features

Roomy! used in three moves. Not bad for power and MPG. Nice V6 3.0. Great ride compared to a standard japanese. (excl. Lexus). Great roof rack. I like the bubble shape. GRreat with kids!

Worst Features

Clearance too low. FORD you have to become more reliable! This is coming from an Automotive Engineer. This would be really the best in the US class if it became more reliable!

Review

My family has been completely satisfied
with this Taurus GL wagon. It rides
very smooth and exhibits confident and
well-balanced handling. Only 2 small
people can fit in the back 3rd-row
seat, but anyone under about 10-12
years old will do just fine. There
have been a couple of cracking plastic
parts. (One runner on the roof and a
vent control inside) It gets 19-20
miles per gallon in town and about 25
mpg on the highway. Although many
critics may disagree, I think it is
more roomy and comfortable than a Honda
Accord and is more reliable than a
Volvo V70. I have been converted into a
Ford fan with this great car.

Best Features

3rd-row seat (car seats 8 not too uncomfortably), Handling is outstanding.

Worst Features

Rear light on top of rear window needs a better paint job concept- I have seen several where they peel way before their time. Interior controls on windows, locks, and cruise-control should be backlit so one can see them at night. Vanity mirrors should be lit as a standard item.

Review

Worst investment we've ever made. The
engine sounds horrible, we've taken it
back 5 times now to have them fix the
dome light because it decides to come
on and go off when it wants to, and
they still haven't figured out what it
is. The radip has quit multiple times.
The bass gave out after a year, and
the steering wheel has faded after 1
month. The roof rack should've come
with a warning that it was only there
for DECORATION since we put something
on it and it broke! The cruise control
quite after a week!

Best Features

I do like the convenient location of the cruise control.

Worst Features

Everything!
