Nice-looking, comfortable car. The only problem was that nothing worked right. Had to replace the transmission - the transmission folks told me this is quite common - and the heater fan. The heating block cracked and had to be sealed. The air vent system never did work right, despite replacing the fan. The stereo didn't work right, and the turn signals worked sometimes, and sometimes they didn't. Gas mileage averaged around 20 miles per gallon, which was not acceptable to me. Finally, the Taurus got smashed in the side by a pickup and was totalled, but I walked away without a scratch - so it is a nice safe car. Otherwise, a complete turkey.
Forget it. Many of the used ones I've seen for sale have replaced transmissions. This car needs to be rebuilt by people who know and care about what they are doing.
I have owned this car for 8 years now.
Only major repair was heating core for
$500. Minor repair I performed myself
at no cost was putting pan gasket back
in place and retightening back up. Also
pressure cap on expansion tank needed
to be replaced. Other repair was a $20
or so idler pulley went bad - common
Lower cost than all other competing
vehicles, very reliable, decent
performance and very comfortable. Fold
down rear seats allow me to place
bicycle easily in back.
Place quality bearing in idler pulley,
better quality heater core (went on my
1988 Taurus as well).

General tires only way to go. 110,000to
125,000kms on each set. All lights and
bulbs in car are original. with proper
care the Taurus is a terrific
performer. Gets 30mpg consistently.

test as if new.
Power locks, fold down seats and the
Ford knows about the tranny probs and
has rectified it.
Bought this car used with 46,000 miles
on it. Have replaced all four rotors,
the radiator, the AC system. AC is
broken again. Thermostat has been
replaced 3 times. Freeze plugs blew
out on interstate highway at about
50,000 miles and had to have head
gasket job. Car was in the shop nearly
every six weeks from the time I bought
Doors lock on takeoff. Fold-down rear
Everything, including the quality of
Ford replacement parts. I found that I
was replacing the same parts over and
over. Dealer service guys joked about
cutting down a rain forest to print
out the repair records...
Reliability good except for possible
transmission problems in the 40 thousand
miles range. Overhaul can be expensive
and various computer sensors on
transmission and engine will activate
check engine light. This will cause
a smog check inspection failure required
by several states and in turn require
expensive repairs to search for the
sensor and replace it.
Another problem area may be in the
anti-lock brakes which requires
expensive pump replacement if light
