Vehicle: 2002 Ford Focus ZTS 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

We have owned this car for 2 years we paid $800 for it and re-built this one a little at a time. Runs great after only an investment of about $2400. Including new clutch, timing belt, tensioner and belt, new cooling system, new tires, valve cover seals, fog lamps, antenna, rear brakes, coil, plugs and wires. This car has been patient and bulletproof as we pieced the money and parts together since we are on a fixed income. I have owned many cars and this is one of the best for an inexpensive reliable vehicle.

Nothing to complain about, nothing to go crazy over

Vehicle: 2002 Ford Focus LX 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

The LX package is very basic.. manual windows, locks, mirrors. The interior is pretty good quality other than the layout of the cup holders and location. The SOHC is the most gutless engine but is reasonably reliable so far. Cheap repair costs/parts. 66,000 miles.

I've owned this blasted car for 9 years

Vehicle: 2002 Ford Focus LX 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

I've spent minimum of $1200 per year in repairs. Over 9 years. Stuck with the car because I figured repairs are cheaper than car payments. But I've finally had it. I've replaced the stupid motor mounts three times and all three need to be replaced again. Once a pin fell out of the inside of the steering wheel and it was a $500 fix not including being towed since it was undrivable. Currently none of the lights in the dash work anymore. I've had every knob and switch inside replaced. Trunk button hasn't worked in 8 years and I was told it was electrical and would be a pricey fix. The only good thing about my car (manual transmission) is that it gets good gas mileage. Speaking of the transmission, that had to be replaced last year as well. Why didn't I buy a new car?

Worst car

Vehicle: 2002 Ford Focus SE 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

I paid 500 dollars for this car and drove it for exactly one year. After replacing all 4 wheel bearings, the front right spring, plus having to refill the antifreeze every morning during the winter months in Northern Canada, I gave up and took it to the dump. I wanted to set this car on fire every single day that I owned it. I do not recommend, I would not say that this is a safe car. Much happier with my older 1990 Honda Accord.

Vehicle: 2002 Ford Focus ZTS 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

I have had this car for 8 years, it has been amazing, I was actually looking to see what the reviews of my car were like to know whether to take other car model/brand reviews with a grain of salt. I figured that many reviews would be from angry consumers whom may not have had the average experience with their vehicles. It seems that way to me so far because I have so little issues with this car that I am actually scared to sell it, but we are running out of space and planning to have a second child, so -we need a bigger vehicle. Our car has 165K and still runs great. I found it had less serious/cheaper repairs than our 1990 toyota tercel.

Piece of junk

Vehicle: 2002 Ford Focus ZTS 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

We actually have the automatic transmission, it wasn't an option though. We bought this car at 99k, now at 109k we have replaced more than we could ever imagine in this beater (granted, we knew we would need to replace a few things). Replaced both back window motors, replaced the alternator, replaced two separate pieces related to the radiator (both of them exploded while driving, shooting radiator fluid everywhere) not to mention, 3 of these things broke while driving and left us stranded. We fixed a leaky transmission, the valve gasket cover was leaking oil. It dies while idling- it also continues to accelerate even when NOT pushing on the gas pedal, thus eating up our brakes. Don't buy it

Edmunds Summary Review of the 2002 Ford Focus SE Comfort Sedan

  • The 2002 Ford Focus is a wonderful small car that's fun to drive, frugal with fuel and offered in such a wide variety of configurations it would be hard not to find one that suits your needs.

  • Pros

Thoughtful ergonomics, large interior, smooth ride, sharp steering, impressive selection of body configurations and features.

  • Cons

Seats aren't comfortable for everyone, polarizing styling.

  • What's New for 2002

Four new Focus models debut for 2002: the ZX5 five-door hatchback, the well-equipped ZTW wagon, the sport-tuned SVT hatchback and the Mach Audio ZTS. No matter what Focus you pick in 2002, a power moonroof can now be ordered. The high-end ZTS Sedan loses its standard ABS and crummy fake wood dash trim while gaining a rear spoiler. An in-dash six-disc CD changer is standard on ZX5, ZTS and ZTW but optional on all other Foci except the LX Sedan.
