Most people will buy the Ford Flex not for its seven-seater versatility, its impressive technology or its comfortable ride, they'll buy it for the way that it looks. And that's OK as it's one of the best vehicles Ford makes right now.
The top-of-the-line Flex Limited EcoBoost model featured in this video starts at a not insignificant $44,000. With options, though, it easily climbs past $50,000. Meanwhile, the entry-level SE model starts just shy of $31,000.
You can either have seven seats or ditch the middle row in favor of two captain's chairs that slide and recline. The middle seats tumble forward to give access to the rear and all are spacious even if you're 6-foot-4. Cargo capacity is low for this class, but with the Flex's boxy shape, you'll make the most of it.
Cabin materials are high quality. Our Limited model features MyFord Touch controls for audio, telephone and navigation functions. We don't love MyFord Touch because it buries features in complicated menus. Still, this latest version is faster at processing touchscreen inputs, and the dual USB inputs are convenient. You can also get adaptive cruise control and there's even an option to have the vehicle park itself. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the Ford Flex a Top Safety Pick.
The standard engine's a 3.5 liter V6. Acceleration is adequate, and fuel economy is respectable with EPA ratings of 18 city/25 highway/20 combined mpg. If you drive in snow, you can opt for all-wheel drive.
The Limited EcoBoost model in this video has a turbocharged V6 and standard all-wheel drive. It delivers impressive punch on the highway. But calling it EcoBoost is a bit of a fib: its EPA ratings are just 16 city/21 highway/18 combined mpg.
Whichever Ford Flex you choose, you can be assured a comfortable ride. It's also very secure going around turns.
As family vehicles go, the Flex is a stylish alternative to other big, three-row crossover SUVs and we highly recommend it.
